Ill advised?

I have a glass of wine each night at dinner. One of the LCs I work with asked me if I thought that was a good idea since I am nursing. I told her that I didn't think it was a big deal since its one glass. Nursing mamas what do you think big deal or no?

  • I think no big deal. Enjoy your wine. And that reminds me, I have moscato in the fridge.

  • I was told one drink per day wasn't a big deal, although the LCs I talked to did recommend maybe having it after the bedtime nursing session so there would be a longer period between feedings. However, I think the general rule is if you're safe to drive you're safe to nurse. I'm assuming you're having maybe 4 or 5 ounces of wine with your dinner, not a giant glass or the whole bottle. I probably wouldn't worry about it so long as you're not getting tipsy and/ or crunk! Smile

  • I have a glass almost every night. Everything I read says one glass is fine.

  • Absolutely not a big deal. Every single pediatrician and LC I've ever asked this question to agrees. I'm surprised that this person seemed to think it was. My understanding is that most literature even supports it. Strange.

  • I have one almost every night! Sometimes two, but if I have two it usually is in a timespan of right after his late afternoon feed until bedtime, so I'm really not concerned. My LC always says you're fine to nurse as long as you don't feel drunk, so I go with that.

  • Not at all a bad idea. You're doing just fine.

There is no risk to your LO, if that's what she was suggesting. Alcohol does dehydrate, so maybe she meant to keep up with your water?
  • I usually have 1 or 2 a night. I follow the "safe to drive, safe to nurse" advice from the LC at the hospital LO was born at.

  • I read one article that said that as little as one drink every day can cause mild developmental delays, so I cut back to one glass of wine 6 days a week instead of 7 ;-)
