Too much amniotic fluid?

Was anyone told at their a/s that they had "slight elevated fluid levels"? My doctor told me he wasn't too concerned about it but then he had me make an appointment in 2 days with a perinatal specialist and said he's going to start seeing me every 2 weeks starting now. What I found on google is that it can be a sign of GD [I have type 1 diabetes] or that baby isn't swallowing enough. But the rest of the scan was perfect swallowing fine, all organs fine, moving around a lot...

Any other diabetic mommies told they have elevated fluid levels? I'm hoping it's just another wonderful product of diabetes and nothing wrong with our little boy.

Re: Too much amniotic fluid?

  • Yeah, I had polyhydraminos with my first. Do you know what your AFI was? 8-25 ish is normal. Mine were above 40 with my first.

ETA: I have t1 diabetes too.

  • No, he just said "slightly elevated". I go to a specialist Thursday so I'll be sure to ask the exact number then. Did your levels cause you/baby any complications?

  • I had it with both of my previous pregnancies.  For DS1 it was indicative of his birth defect.  For DS2 it was for reasons unknown as he is perfectly healthy.  My levels would fluctuate drastically between appts with DS2.  I expect to have it with this pregnancy as well.  I have never been diagnosed as diabetic.

Yes and no. It meant I was monitored carefully, with NSTs from about 34 weeks to delivery (36w5d). I also had a couple ultrasounds to check the levels. I was told at 36w4d to be admitted because they thought I was a walking time bomb with my fluid levels. With high levels, if my water DID break, it could result in cord prolapse and baby death. So, I was admitted but ended up delivering the next day (36w5d) because baby failed a BPP and my blood pressure was high.

ETA: So the physical increase of water didn't cause anything bad to happen, BUT it did cause me to be admitted early.

  • I'm type 1 also and had my a/s last week.  The doctors never mentioned anything to me about increased fluid levels so unfortunately I can't help you with this experience :(

I hope your follow up tests go well though!!

  • Thank you for your responses. They gave me some ideas as to what to ask the specialist tomorrow.

  • My doctor suspects this because of my uterus measuring large. I go in Friday morning for an ultra sound to see if it is the case or if her measurements were just off. Keep me updated on your situation!
