Reflux and Apple Cider Vinegar

Hey ladies, so my reflux is super bad, and last night my prenatal yoga instructor suggested trying apple cider vinegar. Has anyone else tried this? I looked around on the internet a bit, found some anecdotal evidence supporting it, but no hard research. I'll pretty much try anything at this point, it just smells so vile I wanted to see if anyone else had vetted this one already :)

Re: Reflux and Apple Cider Vinegar

  • I tried it for DDs pregnancy and it did nothing. It was gross, I will not be doing that again. This time I sucked it up and went with a prescription option. I am SO thankful I have.

  • ACV is great for a lot of things.  I'd try Bragg's and dilute it in water or juice (or chase with juice).  They also make a few flavors of ACV drinks that can make it more palatable.

There was another post earlier today about severe acid reflux, and includes suggestions for treatment; you might want to check it out.

I agree. Vinegar is acetic acid. I don't see how adding acid would help. And it sounds gross to me.

  • Heinz unfiltered apple cider isn't terrible. I would recommend trying that.

I don't know how it works, but it definitely does for me. I've been using ACV for a while to treat a variety of stomach issues including heartburn and reflux and it definitely works.

OP, a couple of things to note is that is has to be unfiltered pure ACV. Braggs is the best brand I've tried. You should also dilute it because you don't want all that acid on your teeth and throat.

I am weird and personally love the taste of vinegar (really all things sour) so I just use water to dilute it. You can add lemon and honey to help make it more palatable, or as pp's suggested I believe there are flavored vinegars available.

  • My husband swears by ACV. He even stopped taking his daily prescription because he says ACV works better.

  • My take is stuff like this isn't going to have paid research behind it. Anecdotal is sometimes all you have to go by, and you give it a try.

A friend swears by it in pregnancy. It worked short term for me, but it didn't take care of it all night for me to sleep.  ACV is, however, excellent to aid digestion, heartburn or not. That's fairly well known from a nutritional/natural point of view (ie your MD or OB isn't going to really think there's anything helpful).

That's my take! Try if you're curious. It's a food, and is fine in pregnancy to try.

  • I'm so glad you asked this... going to try this out!

  • It did not work for my heartburn. I drink it occasionally just for general digestion benefits, because it has probiotics in it naturally. At least the unfiltered kind like Bragg's. I put about a half tablespoon in a mug of hot water with honey, and it doesn't taste too bad. It's worth a shot.

  • Thanks ladies!! I'm giving it a try tomorrow, we'll see how it goes.
  • Add me to the camp who can't see how it would work. I like vinegar in general but whenever I have a salad dressing heavy on the vinegar or something, it just makes the reflux worse. It's awful and burns like nothing else as it comes back up!
