Hi! I had a NIPT on Tuesday for my first trimester screening. Does anyone know if they tell you the gender when you get the results or do you have to request it? Thanks for your help!
Hi! I did not do the tests, but heard you have to get the gender portion from your OB. I believe the testing firm only gives you the medical piece of it.
I didn't so much request it as say I was okay with learning it. I got the results from the testing center genetics counselor, not my OB.
Also, you should know that the accuracy for identifying if a fetus is a girl is lower than for determining if its a girl. Basically, if they see a Y chromosome in there, it's pretty clear that it doesn't belong to you! But if they see an X, not so much; it could be yours, it could be hers, it could be his.
(The tests work by looking at the DNA in your blood and assuming that yours is normal, so anything that stands out must be the baby's.)

We had the Verify test which is just like the MaterniT21. We had it done through a genetics lab and when they called with the results of our testing they asked if we wanted to know the sex.
I had the Harmony test done. I did tell them I wanted to know, but they never looked for it. When I asked the MFM doctor's office, they said they didn't know and the test didn't indicate it either. The actual paperwork that I received didn't indicate if the baby was a boy or a girl. I found out at an elective ultrasound that the baby is a boy.
I was shocked when my OB told me Maternit21 can tell the gender at 11 weeks. We want to know so its super exciting to find out early. At my 6 week appt my OB set up an US at 8 weeks and another appt and US at 10 weeks, then he said if we push that to 11weeks instead, the test will be able to show gender so we were all about waiting a week!
I did the Verify test, and although it is genetically possible to see the x/y gender information, my doctor said that she would have to have specifically ordered that information from the company. From what I understand, doctors in the US are not keen on doing that since some folks out there (esp. from certain cultures and economic levels) may use gender to decide on abortion when there is no medical risk! Can you believe that?!
Yes, my MaterniT21 results indicated the chromosome to reveal gender and the physician asked me first if I knew or wanted to know what I was having before he gave me a copy of the report.

In some countries, Canada is one maybe?, they won't tell you the gender even at the 20w ultrasound for this reason. It's unfortunately very common in some non-western cultures to not want girls under any circumstances. I don't totally understand the reasons.
OP, we had Harmony done and we asked to find out sex when we ordered the test. I think it's a great option if you want to find out!

I just had my Harmony blood draw done yesterday, but when I asked the genetic counselor at the MFM place she actually had to call the lab to see if it included gender. The order on the lab slip did not, it's actually test 420 on the slip and 421 that includes gender, I believe. I had an elective ultrasound done on Sunday that clearly showed this baby is a boy, but I had the gender added before I did that. It won't hurt to hear it again.
