Any Ragnar runners out there?

I will be at about the three month point by the time my Ragnar relay comes around. It is hard on anyone, but Im sure is especially hard on pregnant ladies. I'm only running 14 miles and I'm planning on taking it easy and not trying to impress anyone. Anyone else done a Ragnar race pregnant?

Re: Any Ragnar runners out there?

  • I'm running the Ragnar Northwest Passage next month, but I'm not pregnant. I did the Hood to Coast relay last summer which is a very similar format. For me, it was a little easier than running a 1/2 marathon. The worst part was the lack of sleep.

Just make sure that you have plenty of food and water to keep yourself fueled. Which one are you doing? Wasatch Back?

  • Wow good for you if you're comfortable and your body allows. Pre prefnancany I was an avid runner and did the ny ranger on a 6 man team with no sleep. took us 27 hours. I LOVED it!!! Ranger is exhausting but SUPER fun. One of my favorite memories of running. I found it very awkward to run while pregnant so resorted to biking swimming and lifting. Best of luck in your race. I would cut your pace back. Hydrate like crazy including coconut water if you like it. Attempt to sleep when you can. And eat optimally. Go get em!
  • I have never heard of this before, but now I've googled it and am going to see if I can talk my husband into it!

  • Which Ragnar are you doing?

I did Ragnar FL Keys in 2012. One of our teammates was 9 weeks preganant at the time and she did great. We gave her the legs with the least mileage (IIRC she had 10 total?) and her husband ran alongside her the entire time.

I would have been sick as a dog just being in the van during the 1st trimester, but she had no problems. She admitted herself she wasn't much of a runner before getting pregnant (maybe 10 mpw but not consistently), but was able to run the whole thing.

You may still be on the tail end of morning sickness at 3 months, so riding in the van might be tough. It got really hot in the afternoons, so hydration could also be a concern. Be sure to have lots of fluids with you.

There are runners of all levels out there and it's a fun time. Unless your team is in it to win it, I wouldn't feel pressured to maintain and sort of fast pace.

  • I have done Ragnar DC twice, neither pregnant. Just wanted to give out HUGE props to you for doing it pregnant! I can barely drag myself outside for a 2 mile run these days! Hope it goes great!

  • You guys are awesome, thanks for the encouragement! I scaled back my distances by trading with another teammate who is a mom and understands. My pregnancy has been pretty easy going and I feel ok most of the time but a little more sleepy. Great suggestions on water, coconut water yummy! and rest.

And yes it is the Wasatch Back! Been wanting to try DC or Florida Keys!

    Thanks ladies!
  • Sunidaze, it is a lot of fun, give it a try! :
  • You should be fine. I do Wild West relay all the time and I've seen more than a handful of pregnant women running it.
