Molly!

So, you're going to start getting really annoyed by my incessant crochet questions, but I am determined to learn. I had my first lesson the other day, it went ok. I came home and watched some you tube videos and that helped. Right now, I'm just working on chaining and the single hook stitch. I get the impression that it's supposed to be easy to enter the chain, find your loop, etc (the girl in the video said once you get the hang of it, you should be able to do it without really even looking).... but I'm having some difficulty. I'm having trouble determining where I should hook into the chain, then once I decide, I'm having to really pry my hook in between the loops. Am I making my initial chain too tight? Do I need a bigger hook?

Educate me in your waaaayyyyys.

Also - just give me a rough estimate on how long it takes you to make a blanket the size you made me? I thinking that would take me years at this point, lol. Do you always follow a pattern, or do you just do it on your own?

Re: Molly!

  • a really easy thing to do is to just buy a stich book.  they are small booklets at joann's and michaels that have pictures of different ones you can try (its where I learned to shell stich).  another great option is

    https://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory.php

they have tons of free patterns for projects.

it took me a while to get the hang of which loop I was supposed to grab too, so if it takes you some time, don't be discouraged. I can do a scarf in a couple days worth of lunch breaks.

some of it depends on how large your stiches and yarn is.  using a fingering weight will take longer than a chunky, a single stich longer than a double or treble.

its a great skill once you get the hang of it :-)

  • I'll have to get over to JoAnns after work today and shop around. Right now I'm just working with the one hook my grandma gave me and the yarn I picked from her collection. I've been avoiding spending money until I know it's something I'm going to be able to really get in to. But one of these books sounds exactly like what I need. Thank you!!!!

Andreabks is wise! It does sound like you might be chaining too tight if you have trouble inserting your hook into the stitch. Try to loosen up a little and it should get easier!
  • Looks like they got the stitches caught up for me so to answer your other question

To make a blanket the size I made you in single crochet would take a very long time.

Definitely master single crochet then maybe learn half double crochet and make a blanket in that, it will go much much faster.

Or you could just try learning the same pattern I made yours in!!

I just youtubed the stitches I needed as I went! :)

Yeah, I practiced my single stitch last night and in about an hour I got 5 rows done.... maybe 40 loops long? Haha... it was pathetic. I looooooovvveeee the pattern you made me, so that's my ultimate goal. I'll get it!!

Single crochet, that stitch you're practicing, that is the stitch I used for CrossingFingers' blanket. It was on a bigger sized hook but it took about 2 months. Same size as yours lol.
