So my LO is four weeks and I had a natural drug free delivery. I had contractions for two days after a strech and sweep. They were manageable and 5 to 7 mins apart. My midwife checked me and I was 4 cm. so I went to bed. After about an hour or so my water broke and the contractions were coming two minutes apart and were incredibly intense. We rushed to the hospital where I found out I was now 8 cm. Spent some time in the shower but kept feeling the urge to push so I was told I had to lie down. When they checked again I was 10 cm so I pushed for about 45 mins and baby was out. In terms of pain I suggest taking one contraction at a time and really try to exhale strongly. It wasnt the actual pain for me it was not knowing how long it was going to keep going, but luckily all the walking paid off since it took two hours from when my water broke to when LO was born. Congrats! It sounds like you had a very straightforward birth, which is always desired. I'm glad you had a great experience, and I agree about taking one contraction at a time. What was the total length, not counting the two days of stretched out labor? It sounds like you were pretty efficient at giving birth.

I would say two hours. I never had active labour. I went from early labour straight to transition. The nurses were calling it a drive through delivery.

That is wonderful. I sure hope mine goes this way! If you could describe a contraction besides intense, how would you? (Major period cramp? Diarrhea pain? Like your stomach is in knots?) And did being in the shower help soothe the contractions?

The early contractions were like bad period cramps, uncomfortable but not unbearable by any means. The contractions during transition were very strong contraction of all the muscles in my lower abdomen. They hurt quite a bit in a someone applying a vice to your uterus kinda way, however just when you think you can't do it, they fade away. I don't want to scare you they are totally manageable if you breathe, which at the beginning I didn't remember to do. I specifically found forcefully exhaling helpful. The shower definitely helped soothe some of the soreness in my back and helped relax me.

I should add that the urge to push feels like pooping.
