Allergy/Asthma issues?

My Ds is on the road to being diagnosed asthmatic due to a variety of factors, mainly his symptoms as well as family history.  H had asthma as a kid and I had really bad allergies and still do.

My medical doctor as a kid was very old fashioned and never diagnosed me with anything but my first doctor I had after I moved immediately gave me an inhaler because seasonal allergies make my life miserable.  So my point is DS #2 is likely heading down that road.  They are currently calling it reactive airway disease and I have been googling, etc.

I was just curious if anyone has any experience with this or is going through the same thing.  My pedi won't want to actually diagnose him with asthma yet, it seems like before the age of 5 they call it reactive airway disease but she said if he continues as he is we will likely look at putting him on a preventative inhaler.

As of now he is on breathing treatments when his symptoms flare up (usually when something blows in so it is due to allergies or when he gets a cold like he has now).  She also gave me a nose spray to use when he is congested, etc. like he is now but only to use it while he is experiencing symptoms.

Curious who else is dealing with this!  Thanks!

  • Same thing here but my son is 3 now. He started out with RSV at 9 months old and then has been having flare ups ever since. It was explained to me by the children's hospital that in particular the reason they don't like to diagnose a young child with asthma and use RAD instead is because they could be denied entrance to the miltary, ect as an adult and with kids, some outgrow it and that kid would be disqualified for life.

  • I feel like we're experiencing it too.  DS caught pneumonia and had RSV at 2 months and ever since then it's been a boatload of issues.  Whenever he gets congested we have to give him albuterol at night so he doesn't cough and inevitably throw up.  We're constantly using the NoseFrida to suck out all the snot to prevent it from collecting in his lungs.  He always coughs like crazy after a long period of running around and laughing.  Lately I have been wondering if he does have allergies since he was constantly congested for the past 5 months without any other symptoms.  I have a feeling that DS might become asthmatic.

  • Yes we are.  DD is 16 months and we have been dealing with this since she was aboutt 7 months old.  We've been to the ER once with her breathing.  She's on an inhaled steroid everyday and albuterol if she has an attack.  We've gotten the whole spiel on not diagnosing asthma before age 3 from every doctor we've seen.  The reason we've been given is that once they are labelled as asthma, that's what everything is expected to be and other illnesses may get missed. However, after we were in the Dr's office 3 times in one week with DD a few months ago I asked her Ped if she had asthma and she said yes.  She can't really diagnose because of the 3 year old guideline for diagnosing, but with everything she's been through, it's pretty obvious.  The good news is that it's been a couple months since she's had an attack and her nose isn't constantly running anymore.  We have a couple more weeks and then will be taking her off of the steroid and see how she's doing.  We're hoping she outgrows it.

  • DS had his first "asthma" attack at age 21 months and we ended up in the ER in the middle of the night.  Since then, we have had an albuterol inhaler and spacer to use as needed.  This spring, he was diagnosed with seasonal allergies.  He is on Allegra, Singulair, and Flonase.  These were added step-wise starting with Allegra.  His symptoms are very well controlled now.  We have not used his albuterol (aka rescue) inhaler since he started Flonase.  He seems so much healthier.  I am hopeful that he will outgrow the reactive airways stuff, rather than becoming a true asthmatic.

I expect we will keep him on this regimen through October; allergy season here is really bad.  I may take him to an allergist for testing after he comes off the meds.
