EBF moms

Okay this may very well be the dumbest question you have ever heard in your life, but I can't help but wonder.....

DS is 18 months old. I BF him for only 3 months much to my disappointment.

I have heard of mothers who are nursing their babies pump some milk for their older child if the older child is sick. Well DS is very sick and I can't help but wonder if I could pump or hand express some of the colostrum to help him out. Would that even be helpful or would it just be weird? And would I even be able to get enough to do any good?

Like I said, I know this is probably a dumb question, but he is so so sick and miserable I would do anything to help him get better!

Edit! Okay I have definitely decided not to try this. I have had a lot of issues with too many contractions this pregnancy, and I didn't even think about nipple stimulation causing contractions, even though I did know that! I will just do everything else I can for DS. He is just inconsolable and I hate seeing him so miserable! Hopefully he will be feeling better soon.

I know I've heard that you have to be-careful with pumping/nipple stimulation while pregnant (I would think especially if you aren't actively BFing), it can cause contractions.

I didn't even think about that.. Thank you, that is definitely something to consider!!!!
  • I've never heard of this theory, but I have read that it isn't recommended to pump before the baby is born so I wouldn't.

  • Colostrum is hard enough to get with a pump since it's so thick.  I doubt you could even get it right now.  I would stick with good ol' fashioned meds.

  • Using a breast pump is actually a natural way to stimulate labor so I wouldn't mess with it.  It you have been breastfeeding the whole time your body is used to it, but to suddenly do it at this point is inviting trouble IMO.  It's hard to see your kids sick so I can understand wanting to do anything you can.

  • I agree with pp's, for now stick with meds. This is definitely something that you could do once baby is here and your milk comes in. Breastmilk has so many amazing abilities aside from just feeding your LO. If I was still making milk I totally would give DS some (in a cup) if he was sick.

If you had been breast feeding the whole time, then that's one thing, but I wouldn't start expressing colostrum now because nipple stimulation is a way to help start labor.

This is my thinking as well.
