Trying to Get Pregnant

My new PCP isn't "Drink Till it's Pink"

I was really liking my new primary care doc. We were seeing eye to eye on treating my hypothyroidism and everything, and then she told me to quit drinking before I got pregnant.

(the sound of screeching tires)

Whaaaaaat?

I don't drink THAT much. A lot less than I used to anyway--maybe 1-2 drinks every other day. And she told me to quit! How can it beeeee?

Where does your doctor fall on this issue? Discuss.

Hmmmm, well, I maybe drink once a month-ish.  My PCP suggested that I drink a glass of wine every night because I have stress.

    Your dr sucks.

  • My doctor has never mentioned it, but I don't drink that much anyway. We do occasionally go to a local winery on the weekends. And that's about it.

Thanks! We're having problems with the ginger cat, he's old and crotchety and likes to pee/poo on stuff. We're trying to work it out... but, ugh.

My doctor asked about my drinking habits--I thought that was a part of every new patient intake? Oh well, I plan to keep drinking (in moderation, of course), until we get a bfp. Guess a little white lie won't hurt...

  • Did she say why you should stop drinking now and the coorelation with it and TTC? It drives me nuts when someone says, "Don't do this." and they don't state WHY they think that.

I haven't spoken much about alcohol w/my midwife and gyno, but I have discussed it with my therapist in general.

I have binge drinking issues, alcoholism runs in my family, so it's something that I have had to admit to myself when I've never wanted too. I have never had problems with it while being pregnant, and none of the clinicians I see above have told me about any issues with 'drink till its pink'.

  • My doctor wants me to stop drinking too. It doesn't make sense!

She also wants DH and I to stop smoking but that one makes perfect sense. It's really hard to quit though :(

Her reasoning was: "You could be pregnant right now and not know."

My counter argument to that would be that the fetus doesn't share a blood supply with the mother until after the development of the placenta (10 weeks). But I didn't feel like arguing with a medical professional.

I've heard 6 weeks and not 10? But I would have asked that question! I'd like to hear the reasoning after that...

I think it begins to develop around 4 weeks, but generally does not attach (and blood supply is thus not shared) until somewhere around 9-12 weeks. I had heard 10, but I've been wrong before.

  • I asked my ob/gyn about the topic and and the convo went something like this:

OB: Well, one to two drinks is ok.

Me: Ok, well I usually have about one drink/day.

OB: PER DAY!!?? I meant per week! *laughing*

But then she mentioned that I don't really need to worry about it until implantation (or a pos HPT). Whew!

I worried at first about the amount I was accustomed to drinking, but I'm feeling better about it after hearing from others on TB. My hubby brews his own beer and we currently have 6 different kinds on tap! It's pretty hard to avoid it altogether. Plus, he really thinks that I shouldn't worry about it at this point. And then there's the issue of not wanting to let on to anyone we know that we're TTC. I think our f & f would notice if I stopped drinking completely. (Not that that's a good reason to drink! lol)

  • Didn't ask.  I'm still drinking.  If I had given it up when we started trying, I'd be 12 months sober.  That shiz ain't happening.

    I like my wine.

  • I didn't actually discuss it with my OB/GYN but my husband is a doctor and he says drink till it's pink, so I choose that. I think that's a decision you just have to make for yourself.

  • My doctor recommends not drinking during the 2ww, especially if one waits to test until after a missed period.  She has no problem with light to moderate drinking from CD1 until ovulation.
  • Mrs+MeMrs+Me member

HA I didn't drink UNTIL we were well into TTC.

I  hadn't had a drink in over two years and around cycle 3 I decided wine went very well with CD1

My OB said it's fine in moderation (i.e. 1-2 drinks/week).

This is the definition of moderation?

    Yup.  Failing at that.

    Um, yeah, me too.

I haven't specifically discussed it with my doc, so no clue on her take.

  • Here is what my "earthy, hippie-like, recent mother of three Dr. who went to Harvard" told me. You are about to make a human being inside of you, what a beautiful and miraculous event. While it may seem scary you have to remember women have been doing this for hundreds of year and in fact, you have evolved to be able to do this.

Like having a child, you will have to make a lot of hard decisions when it come to the safety and health of your child. As a medical professional I can tell you there is very little solid evidence that drinking in the first couple of weeks of pregnancy will do harm to your baby. However, there is still "some" chance that it can. You have to ask yourself if those are risks you are willing to take. I can tell you with 100% certainty the best, safest thing for your baby and you is no alcohol. I can also tell you that you most likely will be just fine if you do.

To which I responded. I have been trying 6 months. I'm leaning towards drinking wine in moderation in the 2ww. To which she smiled and said "I'd do the same."

I feel like 50% of my conversations with this wonderful talented doctor is rehearsed lines she is forced to say to cover her own . Nonetheless, I adore her.
