Babies: 3 - 6 Months

nap trouble

Our LO is almost 6 months old and I have a really hard time getting her to nap in her crib. I feel like I've tried everything...letting her cry, white noise, even putting her on her belly while supervised. I'm very frustrated and would love suggestions!

Re: nap trouble

  • What sort of CIO are you doing?

So, the first thing I would do is identify what you are CONSISTENTLY DOING every time she naps.  When LO started sleeping longer stretches at night, I realized it was because I had ALWAYS done the same thing before night time, and it was her cue to sleep.  So, when we decided to swaddle wean for naps, I had to start doing something else consistently when I was putting her down (since I had always put the swaddle on for sleep, she now associated swaddling=sleeping).  I replaced her swaddle with a blanket/monkey head thing as her association. Now when I put her in her crib, she hugs the crap out of that monkey, rubs her face on it, chews on it, etc.  If she looses it for some reason in her rolling, she'll cry for it if she' isn't asleep since she has started to use it to go to sleep. does that make sense?

So, what are you doing every time she falls asleep? Are you feeding? Rocking? Holding?  I would attempt a modified version of that, with her ending up in her crib. You could also try to give her something, or play a song every time she falls asleep so she learns to associate sleep with that item.  It will take time-it took a week for my LO to consistently fall asleep not being swaddled in her crib(she doesn't stay asleep after the first sleep cycle but I think that's developmental more than anything) and to not cry when I put her down.  Your LO, at 6 months, will most likely need a CIO modification of some sort. Wether you want to do modified, full extinction, etc. You just need to be consistent, and there might be naps that don't happen.  But eventually she'll learn crib means nap sleep.

  • I have no advice, but feel your pain!  My almost 4 month old used to sleep in her swing or rnp for hours!  Not any more!  She will only sleep when being held, in her carrier or carseat.  I feel like she is attached to me 24/7 and it is so hard to do anything.  She will sleep in her crib at night, but if I set her in there during the day she wakes up instantly.  Sigh....I'm sure things will get better someday.  :)
  • We used the Ferber method at night but honestly she's such a good nighttime sleeper that it could hardly have been considered training at all. Maybe I'll try to mirror nighttime story, nurse, crib. I feel like I've been pretty consistent but I'll really watch my behaviors the next couple of times to make sure I'm being as consistent as possible. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who has struggled with nap time. This shall pass! Thanks everyone.
