Do you have life insurance on your LO?

DS #1 had some but I canceled it because I was paying too much for the amount I think but DS #2 is possibly going to need it as an adult and he might have some pre-existing conditions that would negatively impact his insurability in the future.  I had gestational diabetes while pregnant with him so I know that increases his likelihood for diabetes in the future.  And he is at an increased risk of being diagnosed asthmatic because of his most recent illnesses as well as family history.

I did some research and was curious if anyone had a policy for their kids and if so what they pay?  H and I both have it but I'm worried that as an adult if he does get diagnosed with asthma it will be pre-existing so I want to do some research and make sure he has the option to protect his family one day as an adult.

Thanks!

Re: Do you have life insurance on your LO?

  • We don't have it for Austin, but my H is a juvenile diabetic, so he did have a pre-existing condition when we did get lie insurance. I am unsure of what the policy is for kids- we got ours a few years ago- I know it's higher for my H because of his condition, but nothing astronomical. I guess my only advice is that even though my H didn't get insurance until he was an adult, he has not been turned down for it because of his diabetes and his rate is just a bit more.

  • Yes we have one through our work and it's about 2 dollars a month for 10,000.

  • I have a rider policy on my life policy for DD for $25,000.  I think it was under $5 more per month.  It expires when she turns 25 unless we convert the policy before then, we will probably convert it when she's 15 and tell her that she has to take over payments once she turns 25 so that we can lock in a lower rate.

  • We have one that my parents got for her and one from work.  I think the two total $20,000.

  • I just spoke to our guy at work about this... I am buying a term life insurance plan (b/c I have none) and putting a child's rider on it... for less than $2/pay, I will have $10,000 for DD and any future children.

  • We do. It's only a couple bucks a month and it would cover burial should anything (God forbid) happen.

  • We bought Aria her own policy [the kind you can cash in down the road. I don't remember which that is!]. It's something like 80 a year for a 25k policy.

Do you know who it is through?  I want to look into something like this for A.

  • Grant has a whole life policy. It was a one time payment of about 550 dollars and it provides 20k worth of coverage until he is 25. At age 25 it can be converted into whatever type of policy he would like and he can increase his coverage up to 5x without any proof of insurability.

I'm glad we got this policy because I'm not sure if Grant will be insurable in the future due to all his issues.

The policy is through Shelter Insurance.
