Our dog is freaked out by thunderstorms (and any loud noise, really, but thunderstorms last longer, so it's more of an issue). He normally sleeps in the living room and the bedrooms are baby-gated off from him, but during a night storm, he whines and barks at the gate until DH goes and sleeps on the couch. We've had storms for like a week straight, so it's getting old.
Has anyone had any success in keeping calming a scared dog during storms? What did you do?
Re: Dogs & storms (NBR)
Maybe the thunder shirt will work. I've never used it for my dog but my coworker has . Her dog would freak out on car rides, storms, etc and now they don't have that issue anymore.
That was something I thought of...has anyone else used it? I want to know it is worth the price before buying it.
My dog is fine for storms just not new people. The shirt didn't seem to work for us.
My brother is a vet. He said he has seen 50/50 results on the thundershirts.
There are several options...
Non medications is the thundershirt. I can't tell you how great it works because I haven't heard a lot of feedback.
Natural rememdy - HomeoPet TFLN (thunderstorms, fireworks, loud noises) which is a liquid. I have some clients that find it helpful.
Benadryl might make him sleepy enough to relax.
Aaaand if none of the above works, they can have prozac which you'd need a prescription from your vet, or if you have some just ask them the dosage.
