Stupid straw cups

Does anyone use one that they love/swear by.  Around 7ish months when we started we gave him sippy cups.  When we went to his 9 month appt. the doctor said they recommend straw not sippy for speech reasons.  Lovely, fabulous, no big deal.  We have been through 30 straw cups.  Either the milk gets stuck(biggest problem, which I really don't get and drives me insane), or milk flows great, but leaks like a mother.   Anyone have success with a sippy cup?  Thank you.

*I am sorry, I know we have had like 100 of these threads

Re: Stupid straw cups

  • Well I'm feeling stupid because I am a speech language pathologist and I've never heard to use a straw cup over the sippy for speech reasons. Granted I work in elementary and middle schools. Once we move I'll look in my pediatric speech book. I also have a website I can check. I personally have not tried giving Mira a straw sippy and she still was getting a bottle until 2 weeks ago.

hahaha well you aren't stupid. I had never heard of this before, but once he told me I thought it made sense.  I told my Father who is a principal at a school for children with disabilities and he was all, "of course!  I can't even believe you tried a sippy cup with him!" I was like really?  Why didn't you tell me?  Apparently he thought everyone should just know this.

These are the ones we use as well. They do leak a little but not too bad.

  • I have literally bought every single straw cup out there! I finally found 'the one!' Tommee Tippee makes one that literally does NOT leak. I tried everything to make it leak and nothing!

  • Mothering. You're failing at, duh. I KEEEEEEED!

Seriously, the only reason I knew is because Caleb's dentist told me. He did well w the munchkin cup too as does Hunter.

  • I can't get K to grasp the concept of sucking on the straw, so I am failing at motherhood as well. We still struggle with a sippy and forget about the straws!! He will let me squeeze it into his mouth and he will sometimes chew on the straw but there is no sucking involved and I have no idea how to get him to do it. BOO

    :(

  • Oh I forgot to mention that the pedi dentist said straw sippys are better bc the spout kind can shift their teeth. He didn't mention the speech delay, just braces in the future lol

  • I got the nuby one.  He loves it, the liquid never gets stuck or leaks.  Perfect, thank you everyone.

Karm- We had those and he really liked them, but recently the liquid kept getting stuck.  It was weird and drove he and I insane.

I just wanted to add myself to this club.  The amount of money I've spent on sippy cups in the past month makes me shudder.  DS figured out the straw for the playtex/squeeze ones ages ago, but my problem wasn't leaking... it was the fact that he thinks it's hilarious to suck up more than he can swallow and let it ooze back out down his face.  Forget the actual cup leaking...

I never heard anything about speech delays, only the potential issues with shifting teeth over time with sippy cups. Anyway, Jackson is starting daycare in August, so he needs to drink out of cup without needing to change clothes every time he takes a sip of water, so I started buying every sippy cup in existence since straws are too fun.  Long story short (and I don't mean to hijack this post), the cheap, "throw away" glad ware type ones work great.  ::shrug::
