Colic

Anyone here dealt with colic? Our little girl screams and cries for HOURS each night and nothing we do can console her. Anyone have any tips - or at least able to tell me that it will get better?

Re: Colic

  • I'm so sorry for this rough time!! How old is LO? I'm on mobile. Our boys went through a rough patch from one to three months where the pedi told us it is normal for babies to cry for hours on end. We would just stick them in the Moby Wraps, start dancing, turn off the lights, and play soft music. Sometimes it would help, sometimes it wouldn't make a difference. Eventually, they'd tire themselves out. I wish I had a magical solution! Both of our boys had reflux and we saw improvements in the balling up in pain and gagging episodes from Zantac, but the crying continued.

I found information on the PURPLE period of crying to be really interesting. That, and the happiest baby on the block's strategies. It will get better, but it is so hard to power through on those rough nights!! Many hugs and some soothing baby vibes being sent your way.

Bless your heart. That's the worst! E did that for her first six weeks. Are you BFing? I found that once I cut out dairy a lot of that crying went away. Also gripe water helped us but I don't remember what age we started using it. Other than that, we just took turns doing the 5 S's until she calmed down. I remember it being so hard though. Huge hugs mama. It will get better.

Thanks everybody, glad to hear I'm not alone here and that it does get better! SIL also just recommended cutting out dairy, and today is day 1. Little girl also has reflux and is taking Zantac which has helped but still an unhappy girl (and unhappy parents) in the evening. I'll check out the other sources of info you guys mentioned - Thank You!!

  • I shudder just thinking about DDs colic phase. The Happiest Baby on the Block 5 S's were helpful, and loud white noise. There is a crazy sounding white noise download you can get on itunes called Baby Got Colic. We plugged the ipod into a speaker and put it on constant repeat.

It peaked between 6 and 8 weeks for us, then got better after that. Good luck and hang in there!

I'm so sorry that you are going through this!  I don't think DS was actually colicky, but he did have times at night when he was inconsolable.  I would stand in the dark closet, rocking him and shushing him, that seemed to calm him down a little.  I think he was just way too overstimulated so the dark calmness helped.  I hope it gets easier for you soon!!

  • Sounds like the witching hour. It is very common. I recommend reading Happiest Baby on the Block (or watching the video) if you haven't already. It saved us when DS had his evening melt downs.

Sorry you are going through this. It is tough to see LO in upset/in pain and you can't do anything for them. FWIW- mine had reflux too and the Zantac didn't work. If you don't see things getting better with the meds don't be afraid to ask your pedi for something else. Our LO ended up on omneprazole (sp?) and it worked wonders for her reflux. And like other posters, it does get better, hang in there!

  • To me, it sounds more like the "witching hour(s)" than colic since it's only at night.  The boys went through that from about 6-9wks.  We tried a dark room, soft music, white noise, swinging, swaddling, shooshing, patting, massaging... you name it, we tried it.  Finally, we gave up and just put them in their cribs.  We figured, if they screamed in our arms, let them scream in their beds.  Within 5 minutes, they all fell asleep.  Next night, same thing happened.  It was around that time that I started taking note of when they got fussy after each feeding and activity time and realized it was always around 1.5hrs after waking up.  We started a nap routine based on those times and have not dealt with a witching our since.  It could be that they just grew out of that phase, but I really think it's because of our schedule.  They're use to it and are happier babies because of it.

Hopefully you'll find a solution that works for you.  But if not, know that it'll end soon.

  • Oh yeah.. We dealt with it.  Unfortunately nothing worked for us but she eventually out grew it. Lots of patience and maybe even some earplugs.  She is a very happy baby now. I too found that quiet dark places seemed the most calming.

  • Probiotics were a lifesaver for us! We used the BioGaia brand. Its just 5 drops a day. We are BF but sometimes give a bottle of pumped milk, so we either put it in the bottle or just gave it to her on a spoon. The colic was awful between 6-9 weeks and that was the only thing that helped. She is now 18 weeks and we weaned her off of them a couple weeks ago and so far so good.
