Sleep Sheep

Have people used/liked the sleep sheep?  I got one as a gift, and is it crazy my first thought was I don't know if I want my kid to become reliant on noise - no matter how pleasant - in order to fall asleep?  So, I'm thinking of consigning/selling it, unless from your experience you found it helpful?

Re: Sleep Sheep

  • I have and like mine. I will say that white noise is a god send in many homes, it helps baby's sleep thru noise and put themselves back to sleep. Many people do prefer the homemedics sound spa because it will stay on all night.

My advice: Don't knock white noise until you've tried it.

  • Sell it and buy a real sound machine. If your kiddo was anything like my 1st and wakes every 45 minutes, you won't really care that they are reliant on sound to sleep ;-)
  • I used one with my first and am using it again with my 2nd. I just thought it was nice to help drown out the house noise as they fall asleep. My almost 3 year old learned to use it himself somewhere betwen 1 and 2 and would just put it on whatever he wanted to fall asleep to that night. He hasn't used the sheep in awhile, he uses his seahorse because he can use it as a flashlight to play. I never had sleep issues with them though so my kids may not be the best example.

  • Thanks for the posts! I guess I'll hang on to it, give it a try if it seems needed. I've just had so many sleep issues myself, I hate to unnecessarily create ones for my kid. I guess this will be just one of many, many more things I'll hope my daughter will be better off than me, but in the end she'll just be as messed up as her mamma!

  • We used it but it really didn't seem to work...now we use an iPod that plays baby pearl jam and baby weezer, it plays all night.

  • I have it and like it. Its nice that you can take it anywhere too. Trust me you will do whatever you can to get your baby to sleep. White noise is very helpful and mimics the womb.

I don't feel like my DS was reliant on it... we used it as a "sleep signal" for him, in a way. But he could and would fall asleep without it. There were times when it was definitely helpful in settling him down, though.

I personally like that it won't stay on all night.  I know that white noise can be a Godsend in getting baby to sleep/stay asleep, but there is also research out there that says constant white noise isn't great for baby's developing hearing.

  • Sleep sheep was not loud enough at first for DD. it is loud inside the womb and the sleep sheep just didn't cut it.

I never tried it after her hearing became more sensitive. We finally found that radio static was her magic sound but it had to have it loud for a long time. We gradually decreased the volume so getting her off if it wasn't too hard.

  • I don't like that it only lasts for 45min.  DD1 is almost 22m and still sleeps with a sound machine as will this LO.  She can sleep without it, but we like using it to drown out background noise.  And trust me, you'll want to do almost anything to help your baby sleep.

Thanks for the additional responses!  Very helpful.   And heyitsme, appreciated this reassurance!  And the comment from PP was well put that you also don't want them to require 100% quiet.  Very true.  Thanks again to all.

  • White noise is awesome and when you are exhausted and white noise solves your problem, you are not going to care one bit. We use white noise and we're adults. However, I did not like the sleep sheep because it turns off after so long. We have a Graco noise machine that plugs in and goes all night.

This - its all about creating a reliable and routine sleep environment. I would read the Sleepeasy Solution for advice on this (even if you don't think you want to do CIO, the book goes into creating the right sleep routine). I don't think DD relies on it, but I think it helps her not wake up at every sound and helps her go back to sleep.

This was us as well I put it on for DD and but she's not dependent on it. We also got the smaller travel sized one that way it was easier to travel with and I didnt think the Heart beat setting on the big one sounded real.

  • The newest sleep sheep has a sensor in it that turns it back on when it hears baby crying. So there is a way around the 45 min mark.
  • We actually removed the noise pack from the sheep and take it in the car seat, stroller, etc. DD LOVES the ocean noise, and we use a different sound machine in her nursery all night. White noise of some sort is the one thing all of the sleep books seem to agree on. It becomes a sleep cue. And it works WONDERS, you'll see.

  • I loved our sleep sheep with DS and I'll be bringing it out again for baby #2.  I think it's comforting, and I'm all for trying to keep baby sleeping.

This, but we still used it for a year and a half.  I just bought one that stays on all night for DS #1's room so the new baby crying doesn't disturb him.
