February 2014 Moms

How long are you staying home after baby is born?

My due date is Feb. 8. I'm a teacher and planning on taking my leave after Christmas Break through May. So I'll be off work from Dec. 20- Aug. 1 but technically taking 18 weeks of actual work time off.

I was put on bed rest due to PTL (preterm labor) with DS at 32 weeks... praying that doesn't happen this time!

What's your plan?

Re: How long are you staying home after baby is born?

  • I am also a teacher and due Feb 20. I will probably work til the beginning of February if I make it that long and take the rest of the school year off to return in September.

  • I'm a teacher turned sahm.  We are having our kids back to back so that I can return to work asap.  This will be our last child so when he or she is 3 or 4 I'll back.

I'm due two days before you but I'm in the same boat! I may have to go back for the last few weeks in June depending on FMLA but I'm hoping to stay out until September.

We're going to use my time off as a "trial run" of sorts... I may SAH for a few years. After daycare/preschool costs, I will be working full time for roughly $700/month!!

  • My situation is a little different because I am in residency. But I will work until the day I have the baby Godwilling, and then take four weeks off.

Last time I was in dental school so I worked until the day I was induced at 41 weeks and then took 2 weeks off. I am glad to have that extra two weeks this time.

You should be able to stay off work up to a year, with your job protected. The issue comes in when you have the school's insurance. Then you have to pay the premium rate for insurance after 12 weeks, I believe.

  • I am also a teacher. With my first I was due in mid Oct. I took from Oct 1st through Dec break. With this one, I am starting a new job in a new district. My plan is to work until baby comes then only take 6 weeks. It is going to suck but unless the district is ok with me taking more time and assuring me I will still have a job, the short time off is well worth the long term benefits.

Yeah, it's ridiculous.  That's why we're doing it this way.  I didn't want to leave work, then go back, then leave again, etc.  This way I will be back relatively soon (in the grand scheme of things) and we won't have to worry about daycare costs.  It's tight right now, but I feel like, for us, it's working and it's worth it.

Look into your school district's pregnancy/FMLA policy. Our jobs are protected for us to take 1 year off work with FMLA (unpaid).

  • FMLA is a federal law that provides 12 weeks of job protection provided you've been employed somewhere over a year, the employing body has more than 50 employees and the employer can't prove that your absence causes undue hardship. Many teachers unions have provisions for being able to take a year off, but it's not universal and it's not due to fmla, it's due to individual negotiations. Just as an FYI!

In my case, I'm planning on taking somewhere between 10 and 12 weeks, depending on whether i deliver vaginally or by c section, because it effects how long my std goes.

This is me too. Thankfully we will only have April & May to get through then summer break! That will help :)

I am a teacher as well. I took 12 weeks the first time and had a csection so 8 weeks of short term disability. I am in a different district but am still taking 12 weeks. I am due Feb. 22 and will work until the day my c section is scheduled then return for my Reading Recovery two final weeks of assessments and reporting in May. Then be off till aug.

I'm a teacher too.  My plan is to work up until the baby comes and then take of at least 12 weeks possibly 14 weeks.
  • I'm also a teacher due Feb. 19th. I'll probably take 4 weeks before and 12 weeks after. Then I'll have 4 weeks left til summer vacation (we have a long school year). Then I'm hoping to stay home after that.

  • Most likely take 12 weeks like I did before. Luckily I get full pay for ten then take PTO for the last two weeks. I also get two weeks paid before. I am in the middle of going for a better job (long term) so I will get no Maternity leave so maybe only take 8-10 weeks since we will be not receiving any benefits. It's funny every mother is different but I started going crazy being home for 12 weeks. I really love my job and even though my son was great and easy baby I am not built to be a stay at home mom...
  • I am also a teacher and am also due February 19th:)  I am hoping to work up until February vacation, which begins February 15th (last time I also planned on working until the very end and then ended up on bed rest at 36 weeks and delivered at 39..so I'll see what happens).  I have six weeks of paid time saved up and also have short term disability that will cover another 6 to 8 weeks at partial pay.  I think I will probably go back in the beginning of June and will probably have 3 -4 weeks of school before summer vacation begins depending on the number of snow days we have.  I think that is about 14 weeks off. I am definitely going back before school ends because that way I get paid over the summer.  Not sure if this is specific to my district, but something for the other teachers to look into.
  • God willing, I hope to work until I go into labor and take 8 weeks after the baby is born.  DH is a SAHD, so I'm taking the amount of time that I can take with pay, but no extra.

  • If everything goes as planned, I'll be taking 12 weeks off.  Most of it will be unpaid time.

  • I plan on taking the standard 12 weeks and working until I go into labor. Knock on wood I don't need to go on bed rest.

  • I am also a teacher, due the 22nd. My plan is to work right up until I have the baby (I did last time, too). I will have 8 weeks paid (I will most likely have a RCS), then I will stay home through the end of my school year, which is end of May. I go back to school beginning of July, so I'm planning on staying home until then.

I can actually take 2 years but the problem is insurance and paychecks haha

this about leave time. every state and district is different. my district reads the law one way and others read it another. it's been greived but never won because the law leaves it open to interpretation

  • I am planning to WFH the week of my due date (just moved to 1/31) and then start my leave on my due date. I'd like to take off around 13 weeks and return the second week of May.

This is me exactly! With my due date and several holidays and spring break, I will only be out of the classroom 25 school days. Maybe they won't hold that against me...

  • My DS was a preemie and I decided it was best to leave work and become a SAHM.  We plan on doing the same for this one as well.  I work 1 day a week for my FIL and my MIL watches him.

  • I'll probably only be taking 6 weeks off due to what disability and FMLA allow at my job.  I'm saving as much vacation and sick time as I can, though; hopefully I'll wind up being able to take a little more off.

  • I have really have no idea because we are about to move and I am just starting the job search. If we weren't moving, I'd plan to take about 4 months off with my current job. But I have no idea how things will work out with my new job (if I'm lucky enough to find one).

Also, my husband is a college coach and this baby would be born right at the start of his season...his first season at this new school, so that may complicate things a bit.

  • Also a teacher!!!!!

My best friend is too she had her baby Feb and said it was the best time for teacher babies.

I have been stressing this decision since we started trying 2 years ago.  I think I'll be taking this school year and then next off. Totally scared because teaching is my life, but we have some major projects to deal with this fall before baby arrives.  For next year, looking at the cost of infant day care it's like over 1/3 of my take home.  The stress of working and baby doesn't seem worth it.

I am retired as I like to call it. I went back to work for a few months after DD and was miserable. Now I will remain a SAHM and when the kids are grown I will remain a homemaker. A have other girlfriends who are homemakers too. I have tons to do. Bible studies, volunteering, play groups, swimming, Gymboree. I'm a busy lady LOL

  • Wow, there are a lot of teachers on this board. I'm a teacher as well, and plan on working until LO is due. I will probably be having a RCS. I would love to take off the rest of the year, but may have to go back the last two weeks of school or at least the last week to get things in order.

  • Benefit of living abroad...14 fully paid maternity leave (not as good as canada, but i'll take it)...though with DS I was back on emails and projects within a few weeks.  Realistically, I'll do the same this time around - physically out of the office for 14 weeks, but doing some work when LO is napping.

  • I will probably take 12wks, I took 11 with DS because that's how much PTO I had stocked up and I wish I had just taken the last week unpaid.

Unfortunately I don't have as much stocked up this time so it'll be more like 6wks unpaid, but I wouldn't feel physically ready to return to work at 6wks pp even though I know some women do. We are saving up to cover the time off unpaid.

  • I am also a teacher and due February 7th. I plan to stay as long as I can so I can have more time off. I will probably go back the week after spring break and finish off the school year the. Have the summer off.
  • Due Feb 12.  I took 12 weeks unpaid with my first, then went back part time for a while, then back to full time.  I was on bed rest weeks 33-35, and then delivered.  Honestly, DH and I have been thinking about me staying home after this one, as my salary would go mostly to daycare.  Everyone told me after I came back from leave last time that they didn't expect me to be back!

If I decided to go back I'd still take the 12 weeks, paid or unpaid.
