Adenoidectomy & ear tube placement surgery

My son is scheduled to have an adenoidectomy & ear tube placement surgery tomorrow. We are not removing is tonsils at this point (I hear the tonsillectomy recovery is brutal, and he really does not need it at this point). My question is: if your child has had this procedure done, what was the recovery time for just the adenoids and tubes put in? Did you find the surgery very beneficial? Was removing the adenoids enough, or did you end up removing the tonsils at a later date?

I am freaking out!!!! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much!

  • DS #1 had the same surgery when he was 2.5.  He had tubes before that fell out.  He had fluid in his ears that wouldn't go away and hearing issues.  I do think the surgery was worth it.  He didn't have a sick day from daycare the next year and his hearing test was normal afterwards.

His recovery was very quick.  I think the anesthesia made him a little "high".  He would not stop talking and walked around like he was drunk the rest of the day.

  • Both of my kids have had this surgery. It is always anxiety producing when your little one goes under, however it's really no big deal. The hardest part was waking up from anesthesia, after that both were fine. DD didn't sleep the night after and I assume the narcotics had not worn off. She was happy, just wide awake! Good luck! The surgery did make a difference for both of my kids.
  • My son had this done at 13 months. He was basically fine the next day. it was super nerve racking. He finally just got one ear infection after 11 months. he was chronically sick before but now is doing great. He also has large tonsils but they are not causing problems.

    Good luck!
