First time mom/pregnancy... questions

Hi all!  My expected due date is January 22, 2014.  We have our first OB appointment this Wednesday and are quite anxious as I have suffered 2 miscarriages previously both at 5 weeks.  The one thing I am having a really hard time with right now is body image.  I'm only 5'2" so I've got a small abdomen to fit all of this baby in to.  I am a curvy, heavier girl to begin with and I've always been able to dress appropriately for my body type.  I am really really bloated because I have some digestion issues and I'm really concerned about what to wear all of a sudden.  I am afraid someone is going to ask me if I'm 4 or 5 months along already if I let my belly show at all.  Is anyone else in this type of situation?  I don't know when its appropriate to start dressing my belly or to keep trying to hide it.  Its getting more and more difficult and its really starting to get me down.  I have read too many things about pregnancy saying at 10 weeks you could start showing but it might also take at least 2 or 3 more weeks to pop.  What should I do?  I need some support and encouragement.  My husband is trying to be supportive but I think the poor guy is at a loss on what to do with his pouty wife, LOL!

Re: First time mom/pregnancy... questions

  • I am there as well. I'm about 5'4 and well.. Wide in the hips and just a bit plump.. Right now I just look "fat!". I've been wearing stretchy type pants and a loose shirt for work.. Basketball shorts at home. When I go out I "dress my tummy". It's more comfortable.

So I say... Do what's comfortable!!! Maternity clothes are a heavenly treat!

  • Omg I feel like your whole post is about me lol. I have also had 2 mc and am 5'3 and very curvy normally a size 14. I am bloated to the point I look 5 months along and I'm 10 weeks along. had to get a belly band in order for my pants to fit I also bought a few shirts that are a size bigger than my regular size cause I'm not ready to by maternity cloths just yet. Trying to hold off till after I tell everyone the big news then I will probably let it all hang out. I've also been wearing a lot of dresses way more comfortable than jeans. Hope that helps :
  • Hope things go better for you and your DH this pg ::smiles::! Feel pretty and enjoy your LO
  • Luckily, I work from home and I can wear my stretchy pants all day and athletic shorts yep!  I think maybe I'll check out some maternity clothes this week just to make myself feel better.  :)
  • Well glemir06 it sounds like you and I could be very helpful support for each other!  I hope to go shopping this week and find something to wear that will put a smile on my face  :)
  • I'm in the same boat just not short. I wear whatever is comfortable. A lot of loose fitted tops with a belt under the bust and stretchy pants. When I have to wear dress pants at work, I just wear a belly band. The belly band is great! You can get then at target. My pants are a bit snug too because of the digestion discomforts I'm having. If you know some remedies to help with that, please share :
  • I also forgot that both my mc where at 5 Wks and I'm due jan 22 we're like twines lol. I live in yoga pants and shorts when I don't have to be in public. I'm never posted on here before but had to post because our stories are way to similar. Hope all is going well for you so far mines looking pretty good:
  • I am also a first time mom and I had the same issue. My husband was the one encouraging me to go shopping for maternity clothes. I really enjoyed it and love wearing my maternity clothes. I figured if people ask its not that big of a deal. People can tell that I'm not a tiny girl, I was one of those people that were asked if I was pregnant before I was actually pregnant. So I'm glad I can now say yes. Lol

I'm 12 weeks with one little one. We lost a twin at 8.5 weeks. I had a very flat tummy prior to IVF meds and pregnancy. So having had twins and having had a flat tummy made me show even sooner than average, I think. I have stopped wearing pant out of the house, even with my bellaband. It's too uncomfortable. I mostly wear dresses, which is completely normal for me anyway. Surprisingly though, most of my dresses are empire waist so they look like maternity dresses (kinds convenient) but now I have a belly that shows. I would like to wait another week before I tell people at work. But I am always worried that someone is going to say that I am big for being this early. I would prefer to not say that "I lost a twin, thanks for the reminder" but maybe that is appropriate if someone calls me big :) Then again, I do like having the bump. We have been trying to 5 years and are so very thankful to be preggo!

Not sure if this helps, but I thought that I could relate.

  • Yeah, I feel you. My pants started not to fit a few days ago. The belly band is great for that (Target)! Dresses are also a great idea. If you don't have many, you can try getting some at Ross. They always have great, very economical dresses there so you won't break the bank, and can use them after your baby is born. Loose cardigans have been working pretty well for me as well in hiding my growing belly. I bought one pair of maternity jeans (also at Ross for $12!), and they fit great, but they really make me look pregnant since the denim stops just under my belly and then it's just the soft elastic band. So I wear those with very loose tops. Right now I'm just letting people assume I'm gaining weight. Not exactly fun, but better than them knowing this early.

Hope you can figure out a solution that works for you!

  • I totally feel you!  I am also 5'2" (okay the truth is I'm 5' 1 1/2", but whatever!), and feel like I already look at least 16 weeks (I'll be 13 on Thurs) if I let it out.  I can hide it a bit still, but I only have so many billow-y shirts!  I'm a nurse, so my looser scrubs are good for hiding, but I feel like I am wearing the same thing all the time on my off days!  Not quite ready to "let it all hang out" and show off the bump just yet...maybe after we are totally out with all our friends/family.
