This girl...

bit my nipple. Now it feels like it's falling off every time she eats from it. I am on the verge of tears every time she eats. At first I thought it was thrush again, but I looked closer and can see the bite mark. I want to make it to a year, but it hurts so much. Everyone keeps telling me to just stop, but I don't think I am ready. On the other hand, if this pain doesn't get better I don't know how much longer I can take it. Ugh so conflicted. Anyone else considering weaning now?

  • Ouch. Was this your first bite? C used to bit whenever he got a new tooth and it killed. Use some lanolin and maybe try pumping on that side until it feels better. If you want to continue. I think a lot of us have started cutting back already because our little ones are eating more solids.

  • I wrote the same post on the breast feeding board last night.  DD has 8 teeth, after she bit me yesterday, I screamed and cried, and then she screamed and cried.  I want to continue, but I just don't know, I'm in the same boat as you.  I decided to drop one feed (and give formula) and probably drop another feed in a few days if she doesn't stop biting.  The plan was not to wean until 12 months, but it might be too painful to continue.  Good luck, and slather on the lanolin!
  • Owwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

Do you have some Lanolin? Put some on that sucker, cover it with a breast pad until her next feed.

If you want to wean now, I say go for it. G's pediatrician gave us the okay to wean to WCM at 9 months.

  • Thanks ladies. I think I will try lanolin and see how it feels after a few days. Then I can decide what I want to do. It just sucks because it is the side that makes more, so it would suck to kill the supply on that side. Decisions, decisions...

  • If you want to keep going, let it be "free" as much as possible, i.e. walk around the house topless. Also, sun seems to help injured nipples heal faster.

During the first month of BFing LO, I ended up with a hole on the side of my nipple! Yes, a hole in my skin, a little smaller than a pencil eraser! I tried lanolin and then a prescription nipple cream for a couple weeks, it was soooo painful when he nursed. When I started letting it have more access to air, and sunbathed topless in my backyard a few times a day (the way our deck is situation and where the trees are, neighbors couldn't see me), it healed up quick.

  • I am right there with you. I had terrible pain last week. I think it was a sign AF is coming. Either way, I am/was tempted to throw in the towel.  I'm stubborn though and really would like to make it to a year.

Hmmmm... I could make this happen. DF would probably enjoy this as well!

  • All Purpose Nipple Ointment! Get some pronto. It's antibacterial, antifungal, and is safe for LO to BF from the nip when it's on. You do not want bacteria to travel up there and give you mastitis. That happened to me and my OB gave me a script for it and it was amazing. It will change your life.
