I'm sure we've talked about this before but i'm going to ask again :P
Jack is going through a serious tantrum phase. Anytime I take something away from him that he should have the screams and throws his head back into full on tantrum mode. I use to find it kinda funny/cute but now i'm afraid to even go out to eat in fear of a major melt down in the restaurant. I can usually distract him pretty quickly but I always feel bad for having a screaming baby disrupt everyone's dinner.
Anyone else have a tantrum baby? What are you doing to distract them or discourage the behavior?
Re: tantrum baby
I walk away from him and ignore him. I know it sounds cruel, but it works every time. I think by trying to verbally (or physically if that's your thing...it's not in my household) discipline them, you're just bringing more attention to their behavior and that was their intention in the first place.
G will throw himself back, throw whatever is in his hand, try and smack whatever is in your hand, before commencing into a screaming fit. I walk away, don't say a word, and not even five minutes later, he's found a toy and is over it.
SCANDAL!
Other times when I know he is just screaming for attention I will walk away for a few minutes and he stops because he finds another toy to occupy himself with.
Eta I re read and saw it was when you took something away. I still will sometimes do the hugging thing to calm him but I will explain to him why he can't have that item. IMO, babies can get upset when we take things away because they don't know thu can hurt them or whatever. Sure they don't get it at first, but eventually they will.
some of our worst fits these days are over diaper changes. not sure why. back arching, feet kicking, crying fun. no tears so I know she isn't hurt just annoyed.
I give her something to play with like links or a sock (she's obsessive about socks) and usually that helps. or I sing to her. we have our little "no more dirty pee pants" song DH and I singsong at her on our way to changes so she knows we're not going to bed, just changes.
sometimes that doesnt' work so we say "no", like when she's angry and rolling off the mat, as the changing pad is up on her dresser like 3 1/2 feet off the floor. we tell her no in a stern voice only when she's doing something dangerous like this, or pulling on the plug covers etc.
