Job advice needed

So I FINALLY got my charge nurse promotion a few months ago. I had been doing the work wo pay or recognition for years. I'm completely self sufficient in running my dept. I truly do all my managers work for my dept.

Welp. My manager is quitting and a few people have commented that I should interview for it. Here are the pros and cons

PRO
More pay
More responsibility
Finally be a real boss

CON
Salary pay
More responsibility
Maybe more hours
Less time from family

I've really been trying to advance myself over the past few years and I want to eventually get into hospital administration. BUT I would be the manager over the cardiac cath lab, staging, cardiac diagnostics and cardiac rehab [my current dept]. That's a lot of flucking work. BUT I would get a substantial pay increase

WWJ12D? And go...

Re: Job advice needed

  •  I would definitely apply.  It sounds like a great opportunity.  I know a promotion can seem intimidating, but you are probably more than capable of it.

It sounds like you are very qualified for this position and since you want to get into hospital administration, a management position seems like it would be a step in the right direction towards reaching that goal.Of course it would be more work, but you'd be earning more money and have the satisfaction of finally being recognized for your skills.nbsp; While it seems like a perfect position for you, my only question would be is it coming at the right time? That is, would you rather wait with the possibility of a missing opportunity to have a more demanding job in management until after your kids are a little older.

This is my biggest worry bc my kids are almost 4 and almost 1 ::tear sniff:: My current job is super flexible and I can pretty much do what I want as long as my dept is handled. BUT I'm worried about missing an opportunity

  • If I needed the money, I guess I would have to.  But if not, I would probably wait.  For me one of the perks of not being a boss is when I go home, I leave work at work which at this stage in my life especially with a LO is important. More hours, more responsibility, definitely more stress....ugh.  I dont think I would do it.

But, if its work you already do, are comfortable with it and puts you closer to your goal of administration, then it wouldnt hurt to apply.  Tough decision, good luck and let us know how it goes.

  • I'd say try for it and then you could always say no later if you feel it's too much. But you never know if you dont try out for it. GL
  • Oooooh so a work "friend" just told me that "all the doctors are telling her to apply". Her father is a retired doctor and she's very good friends with a lot of them. As the hospital turns...
