Potty training questions

We just started PT DS2 (3.5 with CP). Today is the 4th day and I'm not quite sure how well we are doing. He has been in the house all day, each day minus a quick doctor appointment this morning (gone maybe 1hr total). We are using a floor potty at home that DH built a base to raise it up a little bit. He can balance on a big potty if he has a potty ring with handles, but you still have to hold him up and then he pees out and all over and the whole thing just isn't pretty (hence the floor potty for home).  We teach the boys (I have 2) to push their penis down with one hand/finger while sitting.  DS2 cannot stand on his own unless someone is holding him and isn't tall enough to do that anyway with public bathrooms.

Tomorrow the therapy schedule starts up again for the week. He typically does not have breaks between therapists other then moving from one therapist and where they are to the next therapist and where they are. Tomorrow is aquatic therapy so he doesn't even get out of the pool between therapists.  How do I do this? Do I put him in a pull up (swim diaper of course for pool time) or keep him in training underwear and plastic underwear cover? Do I have the therapists (OT and PT at least) incorporate this into the therapy session (OT with pushing down/pulling up underwear?? PT with how to sit on a big toilet??)? And really, how do I know if he is truly ready for this? He knows the difference between poop and pee but cannot hold it (it seems) and does not yet tell us that he has to go before he actually goes (but if he goes in his underwear and you ask him if he did he will tell you he went). My goal is to have him day trained before school. By that, I mean maybe a pull up at nap but underwear the rest of the day.

Personally, I'd go with a pull up until he is reliably telling you he has to go ahead of time.  Or at lease staying dry for a couple of hours.  And YES, I would have the OT and PT start working this into his therapy plan for sure.

For the pool, I'd have him try to go right before and then using the swim diaper.  Asking him if he needs to try in between therapists.

You can bring a small portable floor model or I had a foldable potty ring that I kept in my bag.  Oh, and a few thousand packets of clorox wipes too.

I was going to say the same thing.  All of this is what I would say.

  • I'm no help here!  Except to be consistent and our uro says to have them on a timed voiding schedule to get their bladder to develop healthy habits.
    Good luck!!
