Ferber experience

To all who have thought about it.....GO AHEAD!!! Seriously best decision thus far! My sweet little pea had to get rocked/shushed to sleep for every nap, nighttime and it was beginning to take it's toll on me.  At almost 5 months her tubby little self was exhausting my arms haha....and on top of that the night wakings were becoming exhausting, so I went ahead and got Ferber's book.  I highly recommend reading it before you begin, we followed it to a T.  2 nights ago was the first night, we put her down ad turned her sea horse on...he recommends ditching all crutches, sea horse included, but I thought that was just cruel haha....Mind you this was also her first night in the crib, she had been sleeping in the RnP and every time I tried placing her in the crib, she awoke, this being another reason we wanted to sleep train.

Anyway..first night, she laid there for about 10 mins before realizing we were gone, all in all she cried for only 25 more mins, with "checks" and it really wasn't that bad.  That night she awoke once, I fed her put her back in the crib and she stayed!!! Passed out! The first day of naps were much better than expected.  She fell asleep after 20 mins and slept for 50 mins, shes usually a 30 min cat napper.  Her second nap took 15 mins of crying but it was more intense...she was on to us by this point, however, she slept for another 50 mins!

Then last night....crib....out in 5 mins....no crying!!!!

For anyone who is thinking about this method, I highly recommend it, it went so much better than I thought...we followed Ferber's checks to a T.  We'll see how day 2 of napping goes.  Naps seem to definitely be tougher for her, which is understandable and he explains why in his book.

Sorry for the rant..I just wanted to share my success

Re: Ferber experience

  • Congrats!!! We are in the process of ferberizing our DD as well. She also needed to be rocked to sleep every time and was waking up every 1-2 hours most nights. We were exhausted. We followed the Ferber method exactly too and have had 2 successful nights of sleep without too much crying.  I am still giving her a MON feeding, but she is sleeping so much better. Hope it continues to go well for you (and me)!

  • Amazing! We're not too far behind you. The transition from the RnP is no joke, so I figured we'll kill two birds with one stone and sleep train while we're at it. So happy to know it worked for y'all!

  • Glad to hear it's working for you. We had a great experience with it as well (once we got through the first night, which is really hard). Our LO is now going to sleep on his own without any props, waking just once to feed, and is napping better too.

I find it so funny that the 3-6 month board is usually very "anti-Ferber" (which I totally get, based on the age), and then when you go over to the 6-9 month board, there are so many people who say, "I was anti-Ferber, but then we tried it and it worked for us." Count me as another one of those people.

  • I'm glad to hear it worked so well for you. We also had a lot of success with it as well.  I think people assume it's going to be awful but we were quite surprised with how well LO took to it and there was a lot less crying than we anticipated.

It's cute to watch what she does on the monitor and see how she puts herself to sleep.  We still have one MOTN feeding but she asleep within minutes afterwards.

  • I am also on the Ferber bandwagon. We used it on DS as he entered his 4th month (never to eliminate his MOTN feedings, just to help him learn how to go to sleep on his own) and it has been the best decision we could have made. His cat naps are longer, he will actually get in a nap that is over an hour each day now. He also plays longer and is finding a better rhythm.

My Lo was 2 weeks shy of 5 months...Ferber recommends starting around 4 months bc I guess the older they get, the more resistant they are which is understandable.  And in response to other's comments, you are exactly right!! People do assume it to be this terrible cry it out experience and it was sooo much better than we could have anticipated.  She responded so well to it....2nd and 3rd night...NO CRYING, I *** you not, it was amazing.  Naps are still a little tough, it takes about 20 mins for her to fall asleep but no more 20-30 min cat napping once she's out, she had 2 hour and a half long naps! aaaamazing
