Toy Frustration in Babies - Is it normal?

Hello,

Has anyone experienced a child who gets easily frustrated with toys?  My 7 month old gets very frustrated when playing with toys.  She chews on them and then gets upset almost as if she can't get enough of the toy in her mouth.  She does have 2 teeth already, so I don't know if it's a teething thing, or just part of her personality, but I have to take toys away from her b/c of this.  Just wondering if anyone else experienced this with their babies.

Thanks,

Jennifer

My DS will do this sometimes. He use to get frustrated every time I gave him a toy that was too big to fully fit in his mouth. We have one rattle that has large balls on each end that I stopped giving to him because he tries to shove the end in his mouth and just starts screaming when he can't get it in. Now I just give him rattles that are rings so he can chew on the sides easier. I have noticed that he stopped getting so frustrated once he started sitting up to play with toys. So much happens at once, so I don't know if he was tired of laying down and playing or if it was his two teeth coming in.

  • My DS does this. Especially toys that have parts he can't remove, those that are too big for him to put in his mouth, or toys that require skills he hasn't quite developed yet - example, he knows he can stack his cups and tries but gets frustrated when he can't do it perfectly. I just gently guide him to a different set of toys when he starts to get frustrated.

  • My dd does this when she is really tired.
  • My DD used to do this when she was teething, especially with her Sophie. She doesn't do it anymore, but doesn't show signs of getting in any more teeth anytime soon.
  • Toys that she's not allowed to pick up and put in her mouth (a big light up workbench at my Dads or one of those sets with loops on the top that you guide plastic toys along). I've just put them away until later because she doesn't understand that type of play yet. The only toys she gets frustrated with that she still has are her wooden blocks. If she's tired she gets upset when she has trouble picking them up, so she bends over and puts her mouth on them on the floor :)
