Hello! I'm new to this board (well, I've been lurking for a bit) and I'm hoping to get some insight.
I had my sons 3yr well visit and FINALLY had a pedi who believed that my son needs some extra attention (he threw a lot at me... possible ADHD (I know it's too early to dx that though), autism, he has some dev delays). I've been asking since he was 18mo and the pedi that we were going to at the time insisted that the things that I was asking about were "developmentally normal". The big things were that he talked late (not until his 2nd birthday) and he has horrendous tantrums that can be hard to tame. He saw a pedi when we were with my mom temporarily and she wrote him for an IEP but by the time he would have gotten in we would have been in our new home 3hrs away so I figured I would just wait until the 3yr visit.
BIG mistake. I have no idea where to get services for him. The pedi referred me to a developmental pedi and the wait to get in is almost a year. I've called a couple others and they all say the same thing. He wanted him to see a psychologist but I can't find any that will see a 3yr old they all see school aged kids. I found a social worker who would evaluate him and she told me the same things the pedi did (dev. pedi, comprehensive eval, OT) and to basically call the local school system and play dumb and see if they could give me any more info.
I'm at a loss. I don't know who to call or what to ask. My husband is deployed and sometimes just getting through the day with this little guy is a struggle. I can't wait a year. I'm going today to see if there's any little sports teams I can get him into in the are so he can meet some new kids.
Thanks for listening and letting me vent. Everyone here seems super supportive of each other and I can't wait to get to know everyone!
Oh and we're in NJ.
Re: New here and hitting some roadblocks
THANK YOU!!!!
CHOP is where we are on the list. I figured it would be that long even the pedi said it probably would. I would rather wait and go to a quality doc than just anyone b/c they take our insurance. There's also Nemours and they have the same wait time.
Maybe play dumb was the wrong way to put it, but she told me to call and basically ask what the next step was since he was too old for early intervention (how can she not know, she's a farking social worker!?!?!?). I know in NY it's through the county and then the get re-evaluated at 3 and go into the school system if they still qualify (and there is also a 60 wait which is why I waited until we got here), but I didn't know if that's how it worked here. I'm actually going to look into a preschool program through the CDC since they take kids 3-5 since the school district has a preschool that doesn't start until 4 and hopefully as something to get him into until that starts.
I also got the referral for his OT so I'm going to call for that apt this afternoon. I'm definitely going to look into the behaviorist. Thanks again for the tips!
