XP: Screaming While Nursing

LO just turned 18 weeks and has started this odd behavior that I am baffled by.  I'll get him latched, he'll nurse just fine for about a minute, and then he'll start screaming and squalling and crying while still latched and trying to nurse.  If I pull him off, even if it's to switch sides, he completely freaks out and starts screaming worse than if I just left him on the boob.  It usually only happens for his late afternoon/evening feeds, and switching sides only works sometimes.  He doesn't discriminate; this has been happening no matter which side we start on.

I'm guessing either teething or low supply in the later part of the day (which is odd to me because I've always had oversupply issues), or he's starting to eat more and the flow isn't fast enough like it is in the morning.  His last feed of the night is usually peaceful, but I chalk that up to being tired and ready for bed.  I EBF on demand; occasionally he has a bottle of breastmilk if I'm not available, but that is, at most, twice a month.

Any ideas or suggestions?  Has this happened to anyone else, and how did you address it?

Re: XP: Screaming While Nursing

  • I just went through something similar and I figured it was a nursing strike.

What worked for me was feeding while walking and bouncing or swaying, and taking little breaks.

  • Both of my DDs did this (with bottles, not at the breast) around this time. I have no clue why. It is extremely frustrating, so I sympathize. DD2 is still in that phase. It started about 2-3 weeks ago and is still going on. Some bottles she takes with no problems, and some she takes a few sips, screams, takes a few sips, screams, etc. It's a little late for reflux to be showing up, I would think. She has also been sleeping like crap, so I'm hoping it's teething.
