Nap regressions are a BIITCH.

Nap regressions are a BIITCH.

Seriously. I have no clue what's going on here.

G has been an awesome napper for the past few months. I felt like I had finally figured it out, so of course, the inevitable happened. We went from taking a 1.5-2 hour nap at 9am and 2pm to taking a 1.5 hour one around 9-10, taking at least 1.5 hours to go down for the second nap, and waking up at 5/6. Before all of this horseshitt, he went to bed at 7pm.

Today, he woke up at 7, napped from 10-11:30, put him down at 3, fought that nap like hell, fell asleep at 4:30-6:30, then I was like, "Ughhhh, what do I do now?" So, I ran a bunch of errands, took him to the park at 8pm and put him in the swings for 30 minutes, and then put him to bed at 9.

The past three days, he's taken his morning nap like this: down at 9, asleep between 10-10:30, asleep for 2-3 hours, and then didn't take an afternoon nap at all or fought it for at least 1.5 hours before falling asleep.

I thought maybe he was ready to transition to one nap since he transitioned to two way before most of the board (7 months), then I keep reading that they'll show signs they're ready to transition now, but they're really not.

These kids really should have come with a manual. Anyone else?

Re: Nap regressions are a BIITCH.

  • I swear that is exactly like how Rylan was a few weeks ago. For about 2 weeks he fought his afternoon nap hardcore regardless of when he woke up and how his morning nap went. He also struggled to fall asleep in the morning too. I figured he was dropping a nap but one day he just started falling asleep and napping normal again for both naps. Idk what happened unless you wanna chalk it up to a developmental leap. Some days he still has an afternoon nap problem but it's not anything like it was during his nap regression.

Eta I eventually just started giving up getting him to nap if he still wasn't asleep after an hour. And if he could make it, I still put him down at his normal bedtime. If I remember correctly, it was soon after that when he went back to regular napping.

  • Man that stinks! Does he cry the whole time he fights it? I would let him fight for maybe an hour for a nap, and then let him get up and try again after a little while. Maybe he is trying to adjust his nap times?

He's trying to drive me to drink. Stick out tongue

He doesn't cry hardly at all. He just plays around in his crib, tosses his pacifier around, and stares into the camera.

  • At this point, I'd say just look for sleepy cues till you can figure out what he's doing.

Liam takes 2 naps, three hours apart.  He's up at 7, first nap from 10-12.  Up for three hours, next nap from 3-5.  Bedtime at 8.  So every 3 hours he sleeps for 2 hours. I should say that it depends on what time he gets up.  Some nights he'll go to bed later because we'll be out or whatever, so he'll sleep in later.  I just go 3 hours from the time he got up for the day.  Usually its 7, but sometimes it can be as late as 8:30.

ETA: But no matter what I look for sleepy cues.  Otherwise he'll just sit there and cry or play.

  • I'm a big "protect the bedtime" person so I don't let ds nap past 5 regardless of when he went down. If he fights the afternoon nap I just go out and sometimes he naps in his carseat and I sit in the car for a little bit so he gets some sleep.

Your lo might not be needing as much sleep now either. I heard they drop down an hour total sleep soon in what's needed for the day. Most days my ds takes a 1.5 to 2 hour morning nap and only a 1 hour afternoon. Somedays he naps longer in the afternoon it just depends. As long as he keeps to that good morning nap I'm ok if the afternoon one is a little crazy.
  • How are you ladies getting 2 hour naps, regularly?!  Very rarely DS will nap for 2 hours.  Typically it's 1 hour, maybe 1.5 hours.  This weekend - 45 min naps.  And then a 3rd nap that I had to try = 20 min nap, that he fought for 15 min.  Ugh!  At least he sleeps 12-13 hours at night, but still!
