Scripps vs Sharp for prenatal care

I've been going to UCSD for the past 3 years and I'm done with them. So now I'm looking into either Scripps or Sharp. I'm not currently pregnant, but as you can see in my sig (3 early miscarriages) picking the best one for prenatal/delivery is something on my mind even now. If you can share your experience with either or both health systems, I would appreciate it. Thanks for your help!

Re: Scripps vs Sharp for prenatal care

  • Ill be birthing at sharp Mary birch this August.

I also experienced a devastating miscarriage last year and Sharp did my DnC. The staff was so great and caring.

My OB team is amazing and I feel like I love the care I receive from them.

I used to go to UCSD and left them for Sharp.

  • Sharp was amazing for prenatal care and the delivery! I delivered at Mary Birch and everything about it was great. I had my first at ucsd and was less than impressed..
  • I delivered my first child at Sharp Mary Birch and loved it. We will be delivering our second child there in Sept as well.

  • I was also with UCSD before and I think I'm done with them too! I'm pregnant with my first child so I decided to try out Scripps. I have my first appt next week on Friday. So we'll see how it goes. I've read good things about both Scripps and Sharp though.
  • I had a dnc in October at Scripps and they were AMAZING.

  • No experience with sharp but loved my experience, mostly, at Scripps memorial for my delivery a week ago. My obgyn is out if Scripps Encinitas and is awesome!

  • I will be having my 2nd at Scripps La Jolla and honestly would not choose anywhere else.  every nurse was so helpful and listened to my requests.  The biggest point  was the PRIVATE ROOMS.  I could not imagine having to share a room, that's just not my style.  I have been with scripps since I can remember, my DR is there as well as my daughter's pedi. Nothing but wonderful experiences for me with Scripps.  Now I'm not saying anything bad about Sharp as I have never used them, but good luck with your decision.

This. I had the best experience and I'm excited because they've apparently upgraded the whole facility since I delivered DS1 almost 11 years ago. I've heard the recovery rooms are ALL private suites. It used to be that you had to request a private room and hope there was one available.

I've heard that the birthing centers at other Sharp facilities are great as well.

  • I had 1 miscarriage ending at 23  week and another at 7 weeks.  I finally had a successful pregnancy and my boy was born June 2.   I am over 40 and my OB is out of Scripps Encinitas and I delivered in La Jolla.

With the first pregnancy, I was referred to Sharp because our boy had brain and heart issues.  The staff was amazing and I was really impressed with their service.  Sadly that pregnancy ended but my experience with that hospital is positive.

With my son (born June 2) I was referred to Sharp because he was tongue tied and the ENT doctors their perform the surgery to fix.  Great experience with the ENT staff.

I chose Scripps because it is convenient to my home and my prenatal care and birthing experience was great.  If I am lucky enough to get pregnant again, i will stick with Scripps because I am so happy with their care.

I don't think you can go wrong with either.

  • Can anyone recommend an OBGYN they have been happy with at Scripps La Jolla? I was debating between Scripps and UCSD but after this chain of posts I'm leaning towards Scripps...
  • I had Scripps and liked my OBGYN but am now w/Sharp due to a change of insurance. That said though I like my new Sharp OBGYN Dr Chortkoff and am VERY excited about delivering at Sharp Mary Birch, a very progressive high level hospital, delivering more babies than any CA hospital! If you go w/Scripps, lookup Dr Duhamel; she's very warm. I saw her at Scripps Encinitas but she delivers at Scripps La Jolla. Good luck wherever u choose!

  • MY OBGYN is Dr. Sowa she is not located at the hospital but at Scripps Rancho Bernardo, but delivers at Scripps La Jolla.  She is the same OBGYN I had with my 1st daughter.
  • I actually used to work at Sharp Mary Birch on the high-risk pregnancy unit (so I may be a little biased). I had my son there as well back in March 2012 (unmedicated, with minimal interventions). The OBs, perinatologists, and RNs are top notch. And the NICU is one of the best in the nation (God-willing, baby will not need to go there, but it's always in the back of my mind). I will definitely be having my next baby here again. Best of luck to you! :)
  • I HAD Kaiser. I have Sharp and can't say enough great things. Everyone is so nice and helpful. All most of my dr visits were at Grossmont. Gave birth at Mary Birch. Had to have a C-section after 34 hours of labor.

Very great experience! (Minus the C-section)

  • Can anyone recommend prenatal care/OBGYN from SHARP? I'm due Feb 27th and currently seeing Dr. Maria Castillo. I was not very impressed with her office. Its like a circus in there-sooo loud and the doctor is way too hyper. My OBGYN just to be Dr. Goldstein but retired already. I really don't feel comfortable with Dr. Castillo. Her office is way too loud and looks dingy too. Help, can anyone refer a professional and experienced OBGYN?
  • I am due in May and am looking for a good OB-GYN and was wondering if anyone could recommend someone that either works with Scripps or Mary Birch Sharp?

  • @carmq & Swtdsny:
See my earlier post... I'm a FTM & just had my daughter 3wks ago @ Mary Birch. Had Kaiser (yuck) the first half my pregnancy but was thrilled after switching to Sharp in July! I live in N. County so my group is Sharp Reese Stealy in Carmel Valley. I saw both Dr Chortkoff & Dr Shipp. Dr Shipp ended up delivering my daughter (after unforeseen C-section after induction at 41wks). Both OBs have their own styles & personalities but I was comfortable w/both & would recommend both! And Mary Birch...Awesome facility & caring nursing staff!! Definitely take the tour & any classes you can there. Congrats!

  • I posted a similar thread a few months back. I ended up going with IGO Medical Group in UTC. I have had a great experience there. They deliver at Scripps LJ (but I haven't gotten that far yet). They may only take PPOs but if you have a PPO definitely check them out - I feel like I've received very personalized care from my Dr - Dr. Gunnarson
