Babywearing: best back carriers?

Hi ladies,

I don't wear Charlotte much and never did, but I still want a back carrier now that we no longer use our Baby Bjorn.  We do have two Kelty frame carriers, but they are both quite big on me and don't fit well - my husband uses them more.

Anything new is out of our price range, BUT I have found two used carriers on Craigslist:  a Babyhawk Mei Tei for $25 and an Ergo for $65.

Which of these would you recommend for back carrying?  Mei Tei owners, is it that challenging to get the hang of, making the Ergo worth the extra money?  Are the padded straps on the Ergo worth the extra money?  For the same price as the used Ergo, should I just pick up a Boba Air?

Thanks!

  • I love the Ergo! The padding is nice on the shoulders. I carried DD1 in it when she was 2. So it has durability too.
They should make a place where you can rent them or try them out before buying.

  • You can never go wrong with an ergo, IMO.

  • I also recommend the Ergo. It's very comfy!

  • Ergo lover here too! The back carry has been awesome. DS loves being about to look around. Wearing it reminds me a lot of when you have a proper fitting hiking backpack... the majority of the weight sits at your waist.

Excellent.  This is the problem I have with our Kelty frame carriers.  My husband is like, "Just adjust it so all the weight is on your waist."  Unfortunately, I just think that my frame and the Kelty frame are not friends - I can never adjust it properly!

I'm going to check out the Babyhawk today because it's closer and cheaper.  If I can't get the hang of it and don't like it, I'm planning to email the gal with the Ergo again.

    Thanks for the advice, ladies!

  • I'm a mei tai hall but that's poorly because I'm plus sized and big chested. No snaps buckles our anything else. Just tie.

I have a babyhawk mei tei which I love, BUT, since our LOs are getting bigger, unless it's a "toddlerhawk", it probably won't be the best option.  The shoulders are padded which is good for you, but the rest of the straps aren't - so, since LOs are bigger/heavier, the straps do tend to dig into their legs more.  It's worth the extra $ to go for the Ergo, to last longer.  I won't be using my MT much longer for that reason.

As far as getting the hang of it, just practice at home in front of a mirror and/or w/ LO mostly over the bed or couch, just in case.  It does take a bit to get used to, but after a few practices, you'll have it down!
