High-Risk Pregnancy

Are you prepping for baby differently due to high risk?

With my scare a week and a half ago, where we weren't quite sure if I'd be put on bed rest, or end up delivering, or end up having nothing happen, I'm now worried I'll give birth really early.

All that happened in the last week has me thinking about the baby things I've registered for or already bought that are dependent on baby's size. If I have the baby soon, he'll be tiny, and a lot of the stuff won't work (granted, wouldn't need a lot of it right away assuming a NICU stay).

It has me rethinking my purchase strategies...

And, I'm also wondering if there's something else I should be doing to prepare just in case I do give birth to a preemie?

Anyone else wondering what to do here?

(FWIW, I am 27 weeks along)

Re: Are you prepping for baby differently due to high risk?

  • This is our third pregnancy but I set a deadline as far as when I wanted the "great room shuffle" to happen and the twins nursery to be painted and set up. Now that that is all done and the little things we needed two of (swing, bouncy, bottles, etc) have been purchased I pushed to get my pump a littler earlier than normal. I asked me OB to fax over a script for it now instead of 30 days before my edd since I am on BR and we just dont know. He understands I have a type A personality and didnt fight me on it Big Smile

Since we knew the twins would be on the smaller side, even my other two were average sized (6lb5oz and 6lb11oz) but soooo many people said they were "small" we decided to get 2 weeks worth of preemie sleepers for the twins and will get more if needed.

IMO, you wont know until the baby gets here. If you do have a stay in the NICU then the baby more than likely wont be wearing clothes. Unless you live in an urber rural area, you can quick run out (or have someone do it for you) and grab a few outfits when they allow you to put clothes on babe.

  • I just finished up a very high risk pregnancy (bed rest for 6 months due to hemorrhage and partial placental abruption at 11 weeks). I had my daughter at 35 weeks and she weighed 3 lb 14 oz. Things to buy: preemie size diapers, onesies, sleepers, hats, etc. Start looking now because unless you buy online, preemie size stuff is hard to find. My daughter spent 2 weeks in the NICU and I was kind of surprised that I was expected to clothe her while she was there. We had to bring in clothes, blankets, swaddlers, hats, etc. We bought a car seat that starts at 4 lb instead of 5 (Graco) and we have a swing but after weeks of being home she still can't use it do to her size. We use a small travel crib beside our bed instead of a regular size one. And definitely get an electric pump if you plan to nurse. My insurance covered it 100% because my doctor gave me a prescription due to the high risk/preemie possibility. I am very happy I did that early because everything was crazy once we were in the hospital. I had planned on breastfeeding but the NICU made that difficult. You can also rent hospital grade ones. Good luck!
  • With DD I delivered at 33.5 weeks and was in and out of the hospital/on hospital bed rest starting at 28 weeks and we were very unprepared with "everything".  Coming into this pregnancy as high risk and knowing that I was at a high risk of delivering early and being on bed rest we bought everything earlier (I kept it in the box until later though) and set up DS room and the whole 9 yards...way early.  I just didn't want to feel the same way.  Now I am almost 38 weeks and just "sitting around"...LOL....waiting, but I'm still glad it's all done.
  • I was in the hospital at both 20 and 24 weeks. I was convinced I was going to "go early" but am now at 33 weeks and holding strong. We'll do a growth u/s this week to see where we're at, but unless they want to take him early due to G/D complications I'm feeling like I could go to term.

I'm a total type A and would have prepared everything ahead of time but I also felt like a NICU stay would be in our future if we delivered early. So to help my type-A-ism, I put together an Amazon registry of all the items I think I need. I get free shipping on Amazon (due to being a Prime member, but they still have free shipping on LOTS of items and probably are the lowest cost out there). I figured if I went into labor early, DBF or I could jump online and place the order for all things off the registry. You could also do this with where ever you have locally - just register for all that you'd really "need" in the beginning, and then send someone out to get it for you.

  • My first son was born at 25 weeks and by the time he came home he didn't need anything different than a regular newborn besides sleepers that snapped instead of zipped so that the cords from his apnea monitor could go through. He came home at 6lbs and wasn't in preemie clothes or diapers by then. When he was in the NICU they supplied all that.

As far as this one goes, we need to swap rooms and get DS in a new bed but we're waiting a bit to do that too. I'm afraid of jinxing something.

Amazon Prime is AWESOME, I use it for everything!! Perk - it gives you a month trial for free if you don't want to pay for it (I think it is $80/year).  I'm at 30 weeks and waiting until my Dr. appointment on Monday to really "prep." We are finishing things up at the house this week too. As far as purchasing items, I don't believe I will. I am more or less trying to mentally prepare myself. One thing I will probably do this week if I have had additional changes to my cervix is wash baby clothes and prep my hospital bag. I received an Ameda breast pump for free through my health insurance and may look at getting that ready to go as well. Contact your insurance company if you don't have a pump - lots of them are giving them away or offering them at half-price. Best wishes to you and your little one.
