This is how I feel about food and feeding my DD. Since she has eczema and has experienced allergic reactions from a few foods (avocado, rice cereal, and now yogurt) I don't feel like feeding her is fun. It's become daunting and I feel constantly on edge whether or not she'll have a reaction.
I don't know if any of you remember, but around 4ish months she caught salmonella. If you're familiar with the topic, it's anyone's guess where she caught it. DH & I were even tested to see if we were the one's who carried it and thankfully it was negative. It ate at us mentally and emotionally because we couldn't figure out what we might have done to pass it or where she was at that she might have caught it. We became OCD to the point of being obnoxious. I stopped cooking eggs and chicken for MONTHS just cause I was just so repulsed at the thought. I shower after changing every poopy diaper. We make a beeline to wash our hands as soon as we enter our house. Etc, etc, etc.. Anyways... I digress....
Last night we noticed that her poop looked a little mucousy. This was the sign that prompted us to bring her into the doctor the first time, when we ended up finding out it was salmonella. All the emotions and mental anguish came flooding back. Ugh! Thankfully though, she hasn't had any other poop or diarrhea so it's us probably getting ahead of ourselves. We're just traumatized.
So I think to myself, if this were me, what would I do to help the situation? Probiotics? Acidopholis? Yogurt? I realized I had plain organic yogurt in the fridge and decide to give it to her for dinner. She really enjoyed it and we enjoyed her reaction to it being tart. Fast forward to getting her ready for bed. She develops a "stuffy nose". She's making smacking noises with her tongue. (The only way I can describe this is when something irritates the back of my throat, I kinda do the same thing). She starts scratching all over (face, neck, back of neck, elbow creases, wrists). As I'm breastfeeding her in bed, I notice that she's pulling off my breast more frequently to breathe, and that her mouth seems more moist than in general. I couldn't sleep well last night just thinking of how I'm dropping the ball by giving her yogurt and she's having an allergic reaction. Oh yeah, and there was an earthquake early this morning too! How fun!
I don't know where I'm going with this. Just needed to get this off my chest. Thanks for listening.
Re: Food allergy roulette. *Rant*
Hang in there, mama. They'll only get less fragile and you'll get better and better at managing it.
I have food induced asthma. When I have dairy I have to keep clearing my throat, and cough a lot. Did she have any hives, or a rash tonight?
