Wwa12d? Bedtime

Today we went over to our friend's house for a BBQ and as expected DS didn't nap over there for his usual afternoon siesta. We got home at 5 and he fell asleep in the car on the way back so DH set him in the crib. It is now quarter to 7 and bedtime is usually between 8 and 8:30. I'm thinking that if DS wakes now or at 7 he might be good to stretch bedtime to 9 but if he "naps" past 7 I'm in for a long night. I don't think he will be happy waking up just to eat, take a bath, and go right back to bed. Should I wake him up now? Let him sleep? I can't remember if I've encountered this situation before.

  • I find that when things get screwed up like this, the baby will make up for it to fix things the next day. I would probably let him sleep

  • Let him sleep. He probably went to bed at 5, instead of napping.

Hopefully he doesn't wake up for the day at 4/5am!

  • Let him sleep.  I've been in a similar situation and it's best to not wake him.

  • I do the opposite. and it actually works out fine. She doesn't end up staying up that much later than normal.

  • If it were my DS, I'd wake him up. His internal clock is set that 9pm = bedtime and 6am = wakeup, so when he does take a late nap and I choose to wake him (normally to top off his belly with some milk), he normally goes back to bed just after 9. However, when I choose to let him sleep, he'll sleep until 6am. Early bedtime =/= earlier wakeup.

If you let him sleep, he may wake earlier but in return he may nap better tomorrow.

  • Haha. Guess what? At the two hour mark on the dot, he wakes up at 7 bright and cheery... and right after I cracked open a beer to call it a night. I'll remember this for the future though :]
  • I wake up DD if she tries to sleep past 630. I don't want her going down for the night without dinner and a bedtime bottle. Girl's gotta eat! But this rarely goes well in terms of having a cheerful evening time or an easy bedtime. Last time I let her sleep through, she woke up at 11pm and 3am, starving both times and PISSED OFF. that was a couple months ago though so maybe I'll be brave and try leaving her next time it happens.

  • I won't let DS take more than 3 hour naps during the day because he gets his nights confused. And I will wake him if he is sleeping past 6pm. Dinner is at 6:30, then bath, and bed at 8pm. But I'm super lucky that my LO is happy even when he is woken up. Is this flammable? Eh. It works for us.
