swaddling tips/methods?? Help!

I'm lurking from the 0-3 month board, but thought you ladies could help with this....My little one (2wks old) hasn't napped today other than bits and pieces between waking up crying. She is a little houdini when it comes to getting her arms out of the swaddle! I have tried everything I can think of, including watching youtube for different methods. I've also tried a swaddlepod and a halo swaddle wrap.  Anyone else dealt with this and found something that worked??

Thanks!

Kristina

  • maybe try different swaddle blankets, some are better than others.  I'd also suggest the miracle blanket.   It's a great blanket for houdinis!  https://www.miracleblanket.com/

  • when you look on youtube search "escape proof swaddle" no way she is breaking out of that, one mistake parents make is letting them bend their arms when they swaddle, they have to be straight down at their sides & they escape proof swaddle does the trick of keeping them down.

  • I second the miracle blanket!  Also the summer infant swaddleme's worked well to keep her arms in when she was tiny.

A third vote for the Miracle Blanket. It is AWESOME.

Also, if your LO is a motion addict like mine was, I really liked the Swaddle Strap - they are hand made by a gal in IL, but you can google it to find it. It just goes around their arms so you can strap them into a swing, rock n play, or bouncer. We used it to transition from the Miracle Blanket, and it was fairly painless to wean him off it.

  • I'm a Peds ICU nurse and I joke that I'm a professional swaddled. I was pretty confident in my ability to swaddle until I had my own baby. Ha!

I have a Miracle blanket but it swallowed my little babe up, so I used a regular receiving blanket and a SwaddleMe instead. I make a big triangle with the regular swaddle, place the baby's neck in the middle of the triangle, with the flat edge just below the top of the shoulders. Then, straighten and wrap the arms only as tightly as you can - your goal is only to essentially tie her arms down. I always started from the baby's right arm, and held it down as I snugged the blanket across her body, then pinning the left arm as I tucked the right side of the blanket under her back. Tight, tight, tight is key! Then, I used a SwaddleMe ontop of that swaddle (also pretty snug).

  • I found that the swaddlme's did not work well until my DS was around a month old. I think it was just two large to get a good fit. After a month I loved the swaddleme. So in the beginning I used A&A swaddle blankets. They weren't perfect but most of the time he wasn't able to get out of these. I also used the swing a lot to get him to nap. Pacifier + Swaddle + Swing = Sleeping Dude.

  • Try a woombie so she's zipped in but can still move her arms a bit. Or maybe no swaddle at all?
  • I would also recommend the miracle blanket.  My LO didn't like it the first few weeks but then she started to really love it and she took her longest naps when we used it.

Exactly this. I had a Houdini too and this method was the only thing that worked. We joked it was his baby straight jacket.

  • I agree on the miracle blanket.

and if they sleep better without it, it is OK for them to sleep unswaddled.
