Best sippy cup?

The pediatrician recommended we start offering a sippy cup.  That sounded simple enough, but I can't decide what to buy!

I would prefer glass or stainless steel, but I'm concerned they will be too heavy for a 6 1/2 month old to hold.  I looked at plastic options too.  However, it seems like they all get bad reviews for one reason or another.  (Some leak, those that are leak-proof are too hard for baby to get the liquid out, some aren't good for teeth development, etc).

Do you have a sippy cup that you love?

  • I don't know about love but I have the NUK Learner Cup and I like that it has a silicone sipper. Actually DD loves that it has a silicone sipper.

This is a two pack, but I know they had the single in store:

We had one of those plastic sipper ones and DD wasn't having any of it.

  • We use the playtex twist n lock with a straw. DS has never had a bottle and doesnt get the spout so I figured we would skip that step. This one you can squeeze so the water goes up the straw and they get what to do. So far he's doing pretty good but he does play with it more than drink.
  • I third the NUK Learner.

  • I 4th the NUK. LO has about a zillion sippy cups and these are the only ones he will use. There was little to no learning curve with them.

  • Another vote for Nuk learner. Dd doesn't take bottles but enjoys chewing in this though still no desire to drink. After she outgrows this we will go right to the stainless steel straw by thermos which DD1 loves. I like that it is insulated so we can travel with milk.

  • LO never took bottles, and managed to figure out the Nuk learner right away. That said, she can also handle our big water glasses fine (with our hands hovering around to catch in case) so we are looking for a stainless steel cup. Seeing as she has an interest in cups amd doesn't need to drink much (still BF) I'd rather not encourage the sippy. She spills a lot with plastic though,  so I want a cup that's heavier but not breakable.

We also use these and the straw has been the easiest for DD to use.  It does leak a bit, but we only give it to her during meal times, so she's in the chair with a splat mat underneath her, and I only put an ounce or two of water in it... So the few drops that come out don't really bother me.

We also use the playtex cup with a straw.  It leaks for us as well, but we use it during meals and M already has a bib on so it's not a big deal.  She learned to use the straw right away.  This skill has come in handy a few times already.  We've been at restaurants without her cup and she's been able to drink water with a straw in a regular cup (with supervision).

  • Another vote for Tommee Tippee..

    We bought these

    (Sorry not clicky)

LO loves them. I love them too. I have flung it around and it is leak-proof. Also it's a super easy transition for my LO as the spout is like the soft texture of the nipples on his bottles.

DD #1 refused any and all sippy cups with the valve. We ended up with teh Tilty cup. It will leak if your LO holds it directly upside down but it's a great tool for teaching them how to hold a real cup. We also had good success with the take and toss playtex cups with the straws. We still use them if DD wants to take a drink in the car.

  • We use this stainless steel one: Thermos Foogo Phases Leak Proof Stainless Steel Sippy Cup, 7 Ounce, Pink/Purple

and she can definitely handle it fine.  liquid only comes out if it is tilted, so I put 4 or 5 oz of water in there so she only has to get it horizontal for the water to come out.  She can lift it with that much water and happily guzzled down a full ounce this morning.  The liquid doesn't come out super fast, but so far she is OK with that, and it means it doesn't really spill.
