I don't think your last name is bad at all and both names sound fine with it. I've had to scratch almost every name I love because it sounds weird with my last name, which is a noun that means country. A lot of first names combined with mine sound like a political movement or a religious cult.
I think what she was meaning with Logan was that there's the "gon" at the end the first name and the beginning to the last.. But I actually think in this case it sounds fine.
I think they both sound fine with your last name! Funny though... They feel like completely different style names to me. Logan is a nice name, but becoming too popular these days for my taste. Alphonse is refreshing. I know you're not asking, but Alphonse gets my vote!

They are so different because I picked one (Alphonse) and DH picked the other (Logan). We are only "okay" about each other's picks, but are sad because we don't like the flow of either names with our last name.
I don't like the "gon" at the end of the first name and beginning of the last name (loGAN GONzalez), and I don't like the "onz" in both names (alphONSE gONZalez)...

Our last name ruins a lot of great names too. It's one syllable so other single syllable names sound choppy.

It's the N sound that is throwing it off.
You can either
1. not worry about it because the names are good whether they flow or not,
or
2. fret and research more names.
I would do the second, my DH the first.
Good Luck!

I don't think those names sound stupid at all with your last name.
BTW, Gonzalez was my maiden name.
