F/UP on Montessori Tour

Last Friday, I toured the program that had zero violations in two years.  It was great.  I sent in the enrollment and fee this week.

Only one "gotcha" that results in a question....does it seem insane to you that the uniform is WHITE polo shirts?  DS will be 17 months old.  The website shows hunter green shirts (awesome).  The kids were not in uniforms for the summer.  I read the policy and it states white uniform polos only.  I am no stranger to this; my middle child has stained all of her white uniform shirts for private school, and she wears a jumper over them!

If I do not have to purchase the shirts at their selected uniform shop, in  your experience who sells the most stain repellent and wrinkle free shirts?

White shirts? Yes, they would be stained in one wear with my kids. Hopefully, this school has changed policy since writing the handbook.

I live near an outlet mall and Children's place has amazing sales like $1 polos. I would check out the retail store and determine when their big sale. Usually in July at end of season.

I know Wal Mart sells inexpensive clothing and I was there last August (school begins season) and they had a large section for uniforms.

I have no idea about stain repellent. Can you scotch guard a shirt before wear? Actually, I would probably plan to do a load of laundry in bleach in week.

  • White seems crazy at first, but it is the only thing that you can bleach without any concerns for the color (unless you're just worried about using bleach).
  • New question.  Bleach scares me - you nailed it jnnfrrose6.  I assume I will make a mess, it will stain the next load, etc.  I used Oxy Clean + sunshine when needed.  Works, but is a bit labor intensive and frankly I don't have time to consider this for something DS will wear 5X/week.  How do you bleach whites?  Break it down like I have a really, really low IQ - these sorts of tasks for some reason befuddle me.

The girls' blouses were wrinkle resistant and stain resistant - they are sold by a uniform store and are marketed as such...at only $8 a shirt it was worth it.  Over time, my messy middle managed to stain hers, but nothing like a normal shirt. She had a few ON and WalMart and CP polos and those were in the trash by Halloween.  Lands End - same.  Expensive, and not as stain resistant and they "should" be.

  • I'm no help with the bleach because I am allergic to it and the kids have some sensitivities so we don't use it (plus our school lets us choose from 4 colors so I've avoided the whole situation so far :) ).

For my kids, at that age especially it didn't matter if uniform shirts lasted super long.  By winter they mostly needed long sleeves anyway and by the time the weather warmed up again they were always wearing a different size than they did at the start of the school year.  Always.

I usually go to Old Navy or Children's Place during their sales in the summer and get them for $5 instead.  I prefer the Children's Place ones between those two.

I actually prefer white shirts, because they can be bleached to high heaven if need be.  Seriously I have a bleach pen and have yet to have a stain that I haven't be able to get out of his white shirts.  And he comes home looking like the "before" picture in a detergent commercial.

Also... I do not understand the concept of wrinkle-free kids clothes.  Seems like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

This, white can be bleached, so IMO it is easier to get stains out

  • To your question on how to use, etc.  I wash my whites in one load and the following load I wash my kitchen towels or underwear - things that wouldn't bother me if the bleach got to them.  Which seems to have happened occasionally with the towels so additionally I make sure not to wash my "good" bathroom decorative towels after bleach.

I'm not brand specific so I'm not sure if there are less harsh brands or not.  I do use the hottest water temp, but some people say cold water works just as well.

My top loading machine has a compartment on the top to pour the bleach into.  I make sure the water is already started when I pour it in, that way it mixes with the water as it fills.  You can read the bottle for the amount to use.  Unlike detergent it usually doesn't come with a handy measuring cup.
