Teeth brushing and spitting

Mobile: Teeth brushing and spitting

DH wants to get DD (20 months) to start spitting when she brushes. He started today and it did not go well. She would either drink the water or choke.

My concern is that she will start spitting water during non-brushing times, in addition to thinking it is too early to start this.

At what age did you start teaching LO to spit when brushing their teeth?

Re: Teeth brushing and spitting

  • DD1 was not able to effectively rinse and spit until she was close to 2.5. I don't think most kids under 2 would understand/be able to do it, and I wouldn't worry about trying to teach them to do it until they are 2.5-3.

  • I was thinking about this the other day...but we are going through a spitting phase (he just "learned" how and thinks it's funny, so we're working on not spitting) I don't know at what point you do that, when it doesn't contradict trying to teach manners at the same time.

  • Hm, I haven't thought of it yet. He still uses the toddler toothpaste that he swallows. It's enough of a win if he lets me brush all of his teeth well, We'll delve into the spit thing down the road. Maybe around 3?

This is DD too, with the spitting.  We're teaching her that the only time it's okay to spit is when you're brushing your teeth.  So whenever we catch her going to spit any other time (because she thinks its fun), we tell her no no, only when you brush your teeth.  She brushes her teeth with me a lot in the mornings, so she sees me spitting and wants to do it too, and I can't just tell her not to.

  • I brush when DD does and she just watched me gargle and spit. One night during bath time she grabbed a mouth full and tried to gargle. Now she does it wherever she goes. She is so proud. She gargles, spits and says "Eee Mommy? I bit gurl!" (See Mommy? I'm a big girl!) Now I am trying to teach her that that is only ok in the bathroom, not in the middle of Sunday church service, lol.
