Screaming and gagging herself

in Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months
When DD Is told she cannot do something she grabs her mouth and screams then sticks her hand in her mouth until she gags. I feel like I don't know how to properly discipline her and she is becoming a bit out of control. She is 17 months and we have done time out,smacking the hand, Redirection. Nothing seems really effective yet. Any suggestions?

    Try ignoring it.., probably the hardest thing as a parent but if she sees that it doesn't get a reaction she probably won't do it

    I don't have any suggestions, but just wanted to say I feel your pain.  DS is 15 months and hits and bites like it's his job.  We've tried everything.  Maybe there will be some good answers posted here.  Good luck!

    DS started putting his hand in his mouth and having the gagging reflex a couple of months ago and I thought it was kind of funny so I acted amused the first few times. That's all it took for him to realize that he would get a reaction from me from doing it so when he got mad he started gagging himself and then falling back on the floor and screaming. The first few times I tried to get him to stop and redirect but it wasn't working so then I started looking away as soon as I saw him putting his hand in his mouth. He would get no reaction from me and I think that he thought I wasn't even paying attention to him because I was turned away, so he stopped doing it. He still puts his hand in his mouth from time to time but no longer as part of a tantrum. He never gets a reaction from me so he no longer tries. Hope this helps.
