Tips on nebulizers

So T has been put on breathing treatments 4x a day for the next few days. And he hates it!

I know several bumpies have had to do this with their LOs, any tips on how to make it easier? We don't use the mask, he will barely tolerate the mouthpiece near his face.

Re: Tips on nebulizers

  • DS sucks on his pacifier while wearing the mask.  I have him standing up against his activity table and playing with it.  Since he can't stand alone yet, he has to keep both hands on the table.  He'll slowly grab the mask and I can easily put it back on the table.  When he sat either unattended or in my lap, he flailed and would grab the mask a lot faster.  DS has been doing breathing treatments once a day for 2 months and him standing has been the best for us.

  • According to my pedi, the treatments are actually more effective if they're crying because they are taking such deep breaths. We would put on Yo Gabba Gabba and crank up the volume and DH would dance around to the music. It was the most distracting thing we could think of. A couple days in and he'd sit calmly on my lap.

Are you the nebulizer whisperer?  Can you come over tomorrow and get DS to sit calming during his breathing treatment?   I'll pay you in cookies!

Yep, this exactly. I've had neb treatments since I was little. When your child gets older, if they'll need treatments later on ever, have them sing with the mask on. I'd sing anything and everything and I'd be done in no time. Big breaths > small breaths.

  • Oh gosh, I hope we aren't looking at this for the long term...

But I will try next time with him standing, that seems like it could help, if he stays occupied long enough.  Thanks for the tips!

  • Charlotte had one in March.  We used to loop it through the seat on her exersaucer and hold it up while she played.  Worked like a charm!  If your LO will still put up with an exersaucer, I'd try it.
  • I wish I had advice but DS actually liked doing it and leaned his face into for me... weird kid. I like Manda's idea of using a paci.

  • I turn on Mickey and sit DD on my lap, she does not like the mask but will chew on the mouth piece thing and put it in her mouth which the Pedi said is fine. I let her hold part of the cord as well, and she does pretty well with it.
