Babies: 6 - 9 Months

7 Month Old - Night Feedings - Normal?

My 7 month old sleeps from 7:30-6:30, and wakes for a night feeding around 2am or so.

People are telling me that she should be sleeping through the night, and that we should let her CIO. I'm not ready to do that just yet and thought the night feedings were fine.

 Thoughts?

  • Babies STTN on their own times. I hate all these people trying to "train" their kid to STTN before they are ready. Some babies STTN early, some average, and some don't until well into their toddler years. At this point one feed is fine. She'll stop eventually.

  • BF or FF? Either way, like pp said, babies drop it when they're ready. If your LO is only waking once and actually eating I wouldn't change anything. It is very common for a BF baby to wake to eat at least once in the night.

My 8 month old wakes twice per night to eat.  It's perfectly normal.

You know your baby best.  If she's hungry, feed her.

  • We have about the same schedule. Some nights he sleeps all night, the next he is up 3 times or more.

  • I agree, I think you're fine. To me, 12 hours sounds like a long time without a feeding. Our LO goes down around 7 or 8 and sleeps until 7 am but we dream feed him around 11 before we go to sleep.

  • Dd2 still nurses at least twice a night at 7.5 months and Dd1 nursed 1 to 3 times a night until 13 months at which point she started sleeping 13 hours straight. Don't listen to people, listen to your baby.

  • My pedi told me that at 6 months babies CAN go through the night without eating and suggested weaning my LO from his night feed.  He only wakes up once at night and to be honest I enjoy the bonding time so I am in no rush to wean him.  I figure he will when he's ready.  Some nights he sleeps until 5:30 then feeds and goes back down til 8:30.  I'll take it!

As long as you don't mind waking up to feed your DD, then I don't see it as a problem.  Also, does your DD go back down to sleep easily after MOTN feed?  If she's getting enough sleep at night and not waking up too many times, you can keep feeding her 1x/n for as long as you'd like.

I did wean DS off his night feeding.  He was becoming WIDE awake after nursing MOTN and some nights he'd stay up for an hour or more afterwards (he talks/sings in his crib).  We felt that the MOTN feeding was detrimental to his overnight sleep, as well as to me.  That was the impetus of weaning him, and he's been STTN since.

  • Totally ok. I used to question it too. I'm in the same boat. He's in bed by 7, sleeps until 3, eats, and is back down until 6:30 or 7. It's frustrating becuse I know he can STTN since he has before, but he must need it because he finishes a full bottle.

  • I agree with the other posters, I BF my son, and when he wakes in the night, I feed him. For the most part, that is once a night -- sometimes he STTN.

Sorry - my "cute picture" comment was in response to Kateraid's photo with all of the lipstick kisses!

Anyway, thanks for commenting to everyone. You've confirmed what my gut has been telling me
