I'm so not ready for this!

We bought DD1 a toddler bed.  She saw it for the first time tonight and was beyond excited.  Our current plan is to put it in her room for her to read on and get used to and then switch her to it when she's closer to 3.  I am afraid that she'll be wanting to sleep in it right away.  I so don't want to give up my containment device!!

  • Why would you put it in her room and expect her not to use it? And why buy it now to not be used for several months?

  • I think she'll enjoy reading in it.  She loves reading in her crib but then can't get out when she's finished.  I may be a crazy idea.  We will see!

  • Why not just let her switch then? My kids moved to a toddler bed at 16 and 17 months (one flat out refused the crib and one got hurt climbing out) and it was the easiest transition in the world. The almost 4 year old still won't get out of it after bedtime without asking, even for the potty.

  • That's reassuring.  Any tips on training them not to get out?

I just put them in bed and that was it. I didn't really do any training, just put them to bed just like I did in the crib. I think as young as they were they didn't think to test the rules.

That is probably true!  My 2 year old is definitely good at testing boundaries!

Is the bed set up somewhere or did she just see you buy it?

DS1 was 13 months and DS2 was 2.5 years when they switched. We wait until they climb out. For DS1, we had a couple of nights in the beginning where he would get out of bed and we would immediately put him back in bed and leave the room. We didn't talk to him, just walk him back to bed, tuck him in, and go. After a few nights, he stayed in bed until he started potty training which started a new set of fun. With DS2, he stayed in bed from the first night and only gets out to go to the bathroom. The only problem is that after the bathroom he doesn't always want to go back in bed but the initial going to sleep is great.

We bought it used so she saw my husband carry it in.  She hasn't climbed out but sometime between now and when they baby comes we need to get the girls sharing a room and DD1 in a crib.  It would be nice to push it all off until one was climbing out!

  • My almost 4 yr old never gets out either and he's been in the toddler bed since he turned 2.  We put a bed rail on the side so I think it felt more like a crib to him, and then we would shut his bedroom door and told him to call for us in the morning when he wakes up.  Somehow it was that easy.

  • We were going to do the same thing, just put the bed in the room and transition her. She was so excited to sleep in it that it didn't work that way. Since she was 18 mo. and already escaping the crib, we tranitioned her the first night and never looked back.

  • DD was getting way to heavy for me to lift into her crib every day.  We switched a couple months ago and it was just fine.  I thought the same thing as you, that DD will cause havoc now that she could get out, but it was just fine.  she sleeps the whole night thru in it and when she wakes up in the morning she gets up and plays with her toys.  I have a feeling if it's in the same room she will want to sleep in it.

  • EEK!!! Wow, it's that time already? :)

I'd love an update post on how it goes. Nolan just turned 2yrs and a toddler bed is the farthest thing from my mind but I know we will be approaching that time before I know it.

  • We switched my DD to a toddler bed when she was 2.5. We left the crib assembled, but she loved the toddler bed instantly and we took the crib down after her first night in her new bed.

I don't know if I would encourage playing where you want her to sleep.

Good point!  I think she's going to want to switch she's pretty excited.  She's making her sister want a big girl bed also.  I am definitely not ready for that!!
