Anyone's LO consistently sleeping 12 hours straight?

My LO usually wakes up once, and at least couple times a week, she wakes up twice in the night to eat.  Even though she's old enough to go longer stretches without eating, I always feed her in the MOTN, because she's only in the 2nd percentile for her weight and I want to feed her whenever she'll eat (she's on her growth curve, just small like me and my husband, but growing consistently).  However, I was SO surprised and excited when she slept 12 hours straight one night this week!  I haven't done any sleep training, but now I'm thinking that maybe I could encourage her to go back to sleep without eating and to get more calories in during the day.

Anyway, I was just curious how many of your LO's are also sleeping 12 hours, and if you noticed anything that helped that happen.  DH seems to think if we drag out the bedtime routine longer and talk to her in a soothing voice and give her lots of attention before bedtime, that she's likely to sleep longer.  That's what we did the night before she slept 12 hours.  The very next night she was back to waking up twice, but it's also true that the bedtime routine was shorter.  It seems like all of our friends' babies were sleeping 12 hours by month 4, and I always thought we would never get there, since LO is smaller than most babies.  But now I have hope. :)  The LC at one of the Mommy Group's I attended told me my friends must all be lying to me, because very few babies sleep 12 hours, but I really think she's wrong and that many do this.  What are your experiences??

 TIA!

  • Pffft, Connor has NEVER slept 12 hours straight. He goes to bed at 8 pm and is up like clockwork at 6 am talking to his mobile. Sometimes (maybe once a week) he wakes around 3 am to eat a few ounces. I have heard about these babies that sleep that long too,but not in my house.

  • I think our longest consistent stretch was 8.5h. Then she would eat and sleep another 1.5.

  • Morgan goes to bed between 8-9 and wakes up once to eat, usually between 2:30/3:00 and then usually wakes up about 6:30.  There have been a few occasions that she wakes up later, say about 7:00/7:30 but we have only had one STTN and that was from 9:00-6:30.

  • Ha! Not here. I am happy that she stays sleeping until 5. Today she slept until 6 but I was up at 5 anticipating her waking and could not go back to sleep! Grrrrrrr.....

  • If she STTN it's about 9, maybe 10 hours. It's rare though.

  • I wish! No, he usually goes down about 8 and typically sleeps until 3:30-4 am, sometimes we do a quick feeding, or sometimes he'll go back to sleep on his own, and then he's usually up by 6:30.  Still not too bad, though. I'll take it for now!

  • She started STTN right after the 6 month growth spurt 3 or 4 weeks ago. Still wakes maybe once a week, but it's always before I've gone to bed myself. She's in the crib by 730pm every night and gets up between 615 and 630am. We wake her for daycare during the week, and to keep her schedule consistent on the weekends. So we're doing 11 hours... Looks like we're in the minority though!

DS will sleep 10-12 hours a night. He will sometimes wake up at 4:30 and eat, but then he'll go back to sleep until 7 or 8. His bedtime is 7 and sometimes it's earlier (like tonight he went to bed at 6:20). I have found the nights he sleeps 12 hours are when he goes to bed before 7. I didn't do any sleep training and I actually rock/nurse him to sleep. He use to wake up several times a night to eat and didn't start STTN until he hit 4 months, but it didn't lengthen to 12 hours until a few weeks ago. I'm enjoying it while I can because nothing lasts when it comes to babies.

our littlest typical goes down between 730 and 8pm and has slept as good as to sleep until we wake her to get ready to leave for daycare at 6AM. she didn't seem to sleep that well until we started solids. Namely she eats last for dinner. we all eat (husband, 2 yo and I) then while one of us cleans the other feeds her. then she usually nurses after that.

now honestly I can't say that she's not waking up but she's not awake enough (crying) to wake husband and I. there have been mornings we've gone in to fine her playing quietly in her crib. we've done the putting her down sleepy but awake at times and most of the time she falls asleep on her own which I think helps her to fall back to sleep when she does wake up at night. There are times I hear her cooing in her crib but unless she's unruly I leave her be.

  • Mine did from 2.5 months til 4.5 months. The longest she slept was 15 hours straight, it was crazy. Then she teethed for about a month and slept like crap but really inconsistent. Sometimes up every 2 hours, sometimes STTN. Now her bottom tooth popped through and she's back to sleeping 12 hrs, about 8pm to 8am.

Honestly though, it's nothing we did. G just loves to sleep. She is a terrible, terrible napper though, so it probably all comes out in the wash :)

  • Oh man I wish. I'd be happy with 5 hour stetches. She wakes as often as every 20 to 30 mins. At most she's going 2 hours.
I've also heard that friends who say their baby slept 12 hours are lying but that must not be completely true. There could also be the fact that they don't have a monitor on and don't share a wall with baby.

This is us, although she is right across the hall and our house is TINY. We don't jump at every peep. She lets us know when she needs us.

This for us too.  I'd say she's awake and watches me walk out and close the nursery door about 75% of the time.  Around the 4 month mark we started working on laying her down drowsy.  She had a few rough nights (although at that age, we only let her cry for 3-5 minutes at a time), but can now put herself to sleep for most naps/bedtime.

  • I put Margo down between 7:45-8:15 and she'll be out until 6:30-7, with one wake up for 20 min anywhere from 1-5. I nurse and she'll eat and then go right back to sleep...most of the time. Last week though, we had two nights where she was up for and hour and half, happy as anything from 3:30- 5.

This is a great site about sleeping habits.

  • DS sleeps 8-9 hours straight then wakes up to eat, then goes back down for another 2 hours or so.
  • Mine goes to bed at 8/830 and wakes at 5 to nurse quickly, then goes back to sleep until 7 or 8. I may try making his bedtime a little earlier but I'm scared to mess with a good thing.

  • Mine goes down at 7:30-8:00 depending how tired he is, but never passed 8.  If he's awake he's out in about 15 mins.  During the week if I don't have to wake him myself, he wakes up on his own at 6.  On the weekends, since he doesn't need to be up at a certain time he'll sleep between 12-13 hours.

  • My 22 month old doesn't sleep 12 hours straight.  My 6 month old most certainly does not either.

  • We have the best sleeper. Every night she self soothe's to sleep (we have a thumb sucker). Around 7 or 8 she gets fussy, has a bottle and is out. Between 7 and 9 the next morning she pops up. It got so much easier once she moved to her room at 4 months.
