Dry skin behind knees (and elbows)

Lo has had dry patches behind his knees and inner arms for at least 2 months.  Doc recommended Lubriderm instead of Aquaphor. It worked a bit (2 times a day) but it seems to be getting worse. Anyone else experiencing this? What are you using? We go to the doc in 2 weeks and I don't feel like it's an emergency....I may call the nursing station to see what they recommend now that its more prominent. Thanks!

  • Is it red? Then flakes off? Smooth? If you answered yes to all of these then we've been using Lotramin for it and it's working great!

  • We use coconut oil on DD and it works fabulously. I've heard some babies react to it but it works so well for DD.

Martha, I looked up Lotramin online and it seems to come in different varieties (jock itch, athlete's foot, ringworm) - which do you use? We are having the same issue (I think it is due to eczema) and I'd like to try something new. OTC hydrocortisone cream isn't helping.

  • It's not very red or flaky, just dry and rough to the touch. I did just coconut oil tonight which is always my go to. I forgot about hydrocortisone. Maybe I will try that. Thanks mamas!

  • Somethimg magical happened overnight. This morning,  lo's skin is almost healed! Yesterday morning,  before my original post, I massaged in aquaphor for the first time in a few weeks (I was using Lubriderm as per my doc). Then before bed I did coconut oil, Tada! Maybe the combination of both helped smooth it out....shrug.

  • This is how DS's eczema presented itself. We like both Burt's Bees lotion and Aquaphor. Once the eczema got a bit worse, we switched up on the lotions and also started bathing DS with Cetaphil. That helped too.

Keep LO lotioned - my doc recommended lotioning at every diaper change. That seems to help too.

My pedi didn't specify so I got jock itch. I think they all have the same active ingredient? Dunno.

She told me we can tell the difference between excema and "more of a yeast thing" by how it feels. Excema is bumpy or rough, and the yeast thing is smooth. Excema gets hydrocortisone cream and yeast thing gets Lotramin. This advice was great because DD is covered in excema so I thought it was all the same, but hydrocortisone wouldn't have helped the other thing.
