State Disability Insurance (SDI) Question

Hey ladies!

I have a question for a friend of mine. We're both due in August. I've been at my job for over 2 years, but she just started her job in June. We've been reading up on the SDI benefits to figure out how much we'll be able to budget for as soon as our little ones arrive and we can no longer work. From what we are seeing, it's unclear if she even qualifies for any benefits.

This site: https://www.edd.ca.gov/disability/DI_Eligibility.htm makes it look like she would qualify for it, because obviously in the time she's worked she's earned over $300 which deductions have been taken and all the other items on the list as well. However, when you look at the page that actually tells you how they calculate your benefits it says that if she starts her claim in August that it will use the wages she earned from 1/1-3/31 to determine her income. As I said, she just started her job in June.. does that mean that she will not receive any benefits while out on maternity leave?

Any help would be great.. I've scoured the web trying to find any information on starting a new job and what you qualify for, but nothing is very concrete. Has any other mom run into this question? We've tried to call in, but that's just a nightmare trying to get a live person.

Thank you!

Re: State Disability Insurance (SDI) Question

  • Did she work at all during that quarter? If she was working, but with a different employer, her payments would be based on that job--not her current one.

I think you're correct in that if she wasn't working at all, she is no entitled to any payment as she didn't pay into SDI through income taxes.

This is just from my own understanding, and yes, it is very confusing!

I recommend checking out their Pregnancy FAQs pages as well:

  • She did not. She just moved here from out of state and is a therapist, so she had to get certified for the state of CA before she could get a job here.

She was finally able to get through to the state via phone, and it looks like she will qualify for the 55 for the second 6 weeks PFL but not for the SDI at all. I feel really bad for her. She's had a first rough year out here. I was trying to find a loophole to relieve some of her stress.
    Thanks for your reply!!
  • It depends on her company but I don't think she would qualify.

She needs to contact her HR dept.
