Pregnancy after HELLP

Not sure how many of you other ladies have had HELLP, but my little guy was born at 30 weeks due to HELLP and I just found out I am pregnant. DS is 18 months (16 adjusted). I'm just wandering if your pregnancies after HELLP were considered high risk? What was different because of having HELLP previously? How did you doctors handle it? Ohh if you had an emergency c-section, did that cause a repeat csection or did you have a VBAC?

Thanks!

I don't have an specific advice but will follow your post! My DD is 10 months and I had her via emergency csection at 36w0d due to HELLP ...luckily she was almost early full term!  DH and I want to start TTC soon so I have an appointment next monday to talk to the MFM specialist and see how long I should wait, what will be different this time around, how I will be monitored, etc...

It's hard to find a lot of responses related to HELLP - good luck to you and I hope you have a healthy pregnancy :)  You can try out preeclampsia.org - they have forums about HELLP and info there.

    Congrats on expecting #2!

  • Sorry, no specific advice either.  I also had severe preeclampsia/HELLP syndrome with my son.  Before I was discharged from the hospital we did ask the MFM who performed my c-section about further risks.  I really can't remember exact statistics but I know she said I would be considered high risk for any future pregnancies. She also recommended a repeat c-section, although that may have been related to my age. Just to get an idea you can always browse through Mommies again section of the Pregnant and TTC after preemie post-it gives me hope! Hope you have a healthy and happy 40 weeks!

  • Hi,

I had HELLP and delivered my son early at 31 weeks 2 days last week. The doctors at the hospital I was at told me I would be considered  high risk with any subsequent pregnancies and I had a chance of developing HELLP or preeclampsia again. They said after 20 weeks is when I'll be monitored more closely. I asked about VBAC and they said I could absolutely try for that next time. Hope that helps.

  • i had HELLP/preeclampsia and my doctor said to wait 2 yrs, well oops.. 3 months after she was born  (just came home from the NICU)(26 wks 1 .b 9 oz...thought pumping was a barrier to pregnancy..learned it's not ... the hard way!) my son was born full term 6 lbs 3 oz..was monitored closely and had to have csection b/c of the vertical incision i had for the first one. BUT>>>>>7 yrs later wanted to try for one last one..i developed HELLP/preeclampsia again, even though i was monitored closely again...this time made it to 33 wks and 2 lbs 7 oz...so yes you should be considered high risk for any and all future pregnancies, best wishes!!!!

btw..switched doctors after my first, mad that they didn't catch any signs quicker as to what was happening to me

Following up -  I had my appointment with my midwife and he said that yes, I am considered high risk this pregnancy.  I obviously have to have the baby in the hospital which I'm totally ok with. (was planning a birth center birth last time) He said the difference was that I'd probably start coming in weekly at 30 weeks vs 36 weeks, to keep an eye on my blood pressure and all that, and probably more often blood tests.

He said I was a good candidate for VBAC (but that also depends on the type of incision and such that you had).

He also said there is a lower risk with second pregnancies, especially if they're closer together, and with the same partner.

Also, I wont have to see a MFM unless there is noticeably something going wrong with the pregnancy - I just have to be hyperaware of symptoms.

     Again GL to you!
