3rd Trimester

When do baby's "flip"

This is my first time posting here, I entered the third trimester Monday and am so excited to get closer to meeting my little girl.

One question I have is when is the baby supposed to flip head down??? I've hear 36 weeks but im not real sure.

Thanks!

Re: When do baby's "flip"

  • It depends. This time around, little dude has been head down since 16 weeks and has stayed that way (I was high risk so I had like 12 ultrasounds between 16 and 36 weeks). Sometimes they don't flip at all, and sometimes the manage to flip even later than 36 weeks.

  • Mine was head down at 30 weeks and flipped again head up at 31 weeks.

  • Mine was head down until about 32 weeks, then she flipped sideways & has stayed that way...  Dr said she could still turn but she's so big I'm not betting on it...  Check out spinningbabies.com - you should start doing exercises before 30 weeks if she hasn't flipped - I wish I would've...

  • I just asked the midwife yesterday. This was the first time I've ever been curious ,but I've been blessed with a very normal and healthy pregnancy so I wasn't to worried. My baby is flipped and I don't know when she got there! I don't think that you really need to worry until you go for your weekly appointments. But if you are really concerned you can always ask your doctor to check for you. Hope that helps!

  • Any time before 40 weeks. DD didn't flip head down until 38 weeks. DS is head down and engaged in my pelvis at 34 weeks.

  • My doc says we will start talking options at 36 weeks if my baby is still breech or transverse (not sure which she is but definitely not head down).

Ugh. This is my 4th and I have had 3 perfectly normal vaginal deliveries. Not particularly interested in a c-section with this last one...

  • My LO was head down, after being breech, at my last appointment. I was 31 weeks. There's still plenty of time for this baby to move around, but hopefully it stays head down!

  • Usually by 35-36 weeks there isn't enough room for them to flip around anymore, so that's why you probably keep hearing that date.  If they aren't head down by the you will likely need some assistance in getting them there.

My LO has been head down since at least my 24 week appointment but I think s/he's been head down a lot longer just based on where I felt kicks and stuff.

  • Why is flip in quotations? You realize they do actually flip right? Not "flip"?

Mine is still flipping and rolling at 31 weeks. They go head down usually around 32-36 weeks, but can all the way up to right before labor.

I do realize this although some people may say when the baby spins.
  • This LO started out head down and flipped to the breech position around 27 weeks and is still in that position.

With my 1st child, she flipped to a head-down position at 38 weeks.

  • I'm 33 weeks and LO has either been transverse or breech for most of my pregnancy. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she has grand flipping plans for sometime in the next few weeks!

  • I am not sure there is an exact date that the baby flips. My little girl has been head down since my a/s at 20weeks and I am hoping she stays that way. :)

  • Mine was transverse for the longest time, then breech at my 35 week appointment and had turned head down by 36.

  • I hear it really depends on the baby

  • As others said, it depends. My babies have settled in their position around 33 weeks. It varies a lot though, and I sought chiro care for good positioning which may have helped.
