High-Risk Pregnancy

Ultrasound Issues

So I'm 36, pregnant with my second, overweight, and I have GD.  I went for my 20 week ultrasound and we saw the baby, fingers, toes, etc. However, when I spoke to my dr, she wants to do a repeat ultrasound bc they couldn't get good measurements. Has anyone else had this happen? It has me a little concerned.

Thanks in advance :)

Re: Ultrasound Issues

  • We almost had this happen to us and at the very last second she rotated and was abe to get the last few shots the doctor needed. She was curled up in a little ball. There are a few of the girls on the Oct 13 board who had this happen to them and they had to go back for a 2nd US to get the rest of the measurements. But all was well.

  • At our 20 week anatomy scan with dd2 they could not get clear pictures of her heart due to her position. We had a repeat scan at 24 weeks and everything was fine. She just didn't want to move to give them a god look the first time.

This was us exactly. Needing to repeat certain measurements is pretty common, I would not worry about it. I do not think any of your risk factors had anything to do with it.

My daughter was breech inside my odd-shaped half-size uterus, and they had lots of problems seeing everything they needed to correctly. They didn't tell me I would need to come back specifically for the measurement checks, but I was coming back every 1-2 weeks for cervix length checks, so they just rechecked her measurements then.....and always was turned the wrong way, so they had a hard time getting all the measurements, but did what they could.

Try not to worry about it. Babies can be stubborn!

  • I was diagnosed GD at about 24 weeks. So it was after the 20 week scan.

Once I was diagnosed GD they scheduled additional measurement scans. I had one at about 30 weeks. They are looking at the size of the baby, the amniotic fluid and my placenta. Uncontrolled GD carries a risk of a bigger baby, more amniotic fluid than normal and deterioration of the placenta.

They will likely do more measuring ultrasounds on me the coming weeks.

If you are worried ask your ob.

Follow your doctor, nutritionalist or GD counselors advice and just do everything you can to stay healthy. That's all you can do. Try not to worry too much. Stress isn't good for you, baby, or your blood sugar.

If you just got diagnosed GD, it can take a little a little while before the diagnosis doesnt upset you. I was upset for about two weeks.
