Pregnant after 35

Feeling old & broke down

I'm 36 years old and 35 weeks along and it's been one problem/complication after another this whole pregnancy. Bleeding and spotting three times and placenta previa in 1st tri. Falling down the stairs, a 3-week battle with norovirus including hospitalization, abnormally high Inhibin levels putting me at increased risk of pre-e, IUGR, and preterm birth in 2nd tri. A close call with GD, irritable uterus with daily contractions, separated pubis symphysis that won't go back together until delivery, nausea, baby dropping a couple weeks ago, and now exposure and testing for CMV in 3rd tri. On top of feeling completely exhausted, in pain, and seemingly constant contractions from IU, I'm currently freaking out awaiting results from the CMV test.

On more than one occasion the thought has crossed my mind that maybe my body is just too old to handle pregnancy without significant challenges. Today is one of those days and I am throwing myself a massive pity party complete with tears. Anyone else having a challenging pregnancy and wondering if it's age?

  • That sounds like one heck of a challenging pregnancy regardless of age!  Is this your first?

  • I'm 38 and I know how you feel. This my fourth pregnancy and I haven't had many issues but the first trimester had me bent all out if shape. My doctor said baby and I are fine despite me having hbp but I can't seem to help but worry. Pregnant can have it's ups and downs but it will be well worth it at the end. In my thoughts and prayers.

  • You have had it rough. We're almost to the finish line....hang in there. I have reached the point where I am exhausted and in pain everyday (my back is my problem), but I've got a 3yo who won't give me much chance to slow down. She has also seemed to catch every little virus she can and brings it home to share it with me.  I've spent half this pregnancy battling one virus or another. I miss my teflon-coated super-mommy immune system I had before I got pregnant. I have no idea if it's age related...although I have a few 20-something mom friends who've had babies recently and I think they had it a bit easier.

  • I have NEVER been one to feel my age but this pregnancy, my 4th, is limiting me physically in a way I have never experienced before.  Now, granted, I am almost 45 years old, but I have always had great health.  I have not had the litany of pregnancy related issues like you, but just the "old and tired" everyday feeling.  I am 25.5 weeks and have ovary pain right after I get up every morning that forces me back down on the couch for another 10 minutes until it goes away.  AND my right leg and groin area has suffered what the Dr. termed a "Severe" case of varicose and spider veins due solely to this pregnancy.  It looks like I was in an accident.  These veins really get bulging, aching, stinging and itchy by the end of everyday.  Being in the deep south in the summer, of course I'm wearing shorts, which scares the neighborhood children on a daily basis (mine, thank goodness, have gotten used to it).  I have had GD with the last two pregnancies so I'm anticipating that fun condition again (testing in 2 weeks).  I am starting to feel so uncomfortable, I'm wondering how my body is going to take this for another 16 weeks.

OK, that was a fun pity party - should we do it again soon?  Wink

  • I am certain that had I had children in my 20s  to 30s that my body would have had fewer complications than it has had so far. Never-the-less, I go to a clinic where they've seen it all and it puts my experience in perspective. My OB sees anything short of fatality as a "little bump in the road" to be overcome.

Good luck in your final weeks! I hope all goes well to bring the babe to your arms in the end!

  • Thanks for the support, ladies. I have to hang in there for the last few weeks and then she'll be with us. I'm trying to think positive that she will come out healthy and that hopefully these challenges only affect me. It's temporary and maybe I'll forget all about it when she's born.

  • I feel the same, old. I had a baby 3 years ago and already feel like I am falling  apart at 36 and only 7 weeks pregnant. Best of luck and I wish you a smooth labor.

  • Well you ladies have definitely made me feel humble about my pregnancy. This is my 6th pregnancy and by far the easiest. I do think back to being pregnant in my early 30s and twenties and I actually had more issues then with spotting, depression falling down the stairs, hospitalizations due to enlarged cysts and morning and night sickness all while dealing with sick kids whose dad was away on deployment. So while I'm having a good pregnancy this go around I do feel for those who are having a hard time. You are all very strong and will be in my prayers. Ohh and I'm 36 years old and 31 weeks along. I will be flying from China to the states to have this little one. I do feel really old this time around however. Good luck your almost there.
  • i think its more the pregnancy complications than the age.  I am 36 too and did not think that was so old!

I would agree.  I'm 41 and thankfully have not have any complications.  There are times that I do feel broke down but that is only when the heartburn keeps me up at night...

  • Gosh I just want to give you a hug! Hang in there!!

  • I had my baby at 39 and did not have any complications other than swelling towards the end of the pregnancy. I think you may have gotten some bad luck with the complications. Hang in there!
  • Hang in there, you don't have much longer.  I don't think it's age as I am 47 and will be close to 48 when I deliver.  I will be 36 weeks come Monday.  I have had a very easy pregnancy with little or no symptoms, even with GB.

I wish you a smooth delivery and a healthy baby!
