XP: Solids & Texture

I know it's a hot button topic, but we started DS on solids shortly after 4 months. His pedi gave the ok, he had lost his tongue thrust reflex, he was actively grabbing food off our plates, and he opens his mouth to a spoon readily. We skipped over all grains and went straight to fruits and veggies.

I was never able to give him breast milk (my supply never came in), so I was dead set on making his purees (and buying the organic pouches for when we are out and about). After introducing a few fruits and veggies, DS seems to strongly prefer the store-bought stuff to the homemade. I am almost positive it is due to the fact that the store-bought always has an incredibly smooth texture, whereas no matter how much I puree and water down the homemade stuff it always seems more "grainy" in texture (there are no chunks, but it's certainly not smooth either). He'll reticently take the homemade stuff, but goes after the store-bought food. I apparently like to make myself worry, so...

- Does he just prefer the store-bought because right now the only "texture" he has experienced is the smooth, liquid formula?

- Will he grow to like other textures in time, or is he going to have weird texture issues when eating foods as he grows up?

- Should I keep introducing the courser, homemade stuff to acclimate him to the texture, while offering the store-bought as well?

  • I think if you want him to eat homemade, then just feed him homemade purees. We are going to do BLW with DD2, but if I wanted to keep her on homemade, I wouldn't introduce store bought.

  • He's really young so he doesn't need to eat the purees at all so I would stick to the homemade and not offer store bought at all. He'll start to like them when he gets used to it.  It could also be that he's not totally ready for solids.  So maybe take a week off and try again.

  • great first foods that you can blend down to a smooth texture are avacado, steamed carrots (peel the skins first), banana, squash. maybe you need to invest in a new proccessor to help make finer smoother foods? we use a baby bullet and are liking it so far

  • I add a tad bit of water to my purees to get them smoother.  I have done sweet peas, sweet potatoes, and pears.  I have a butternut squash in the oven right now that I will be pureeing in a bit.
  • As he gets older he will continue to learn to tolerate a variety of textures.  In the mean time, use a sieve or blender (I use a baby bullet and it makes the food super smooth).  You can always add water or formula to help make it smoother. Maybe also try foods that naturally will have a smoother texture when blended/pureed?  I know bananas, sweet potatoes, carrots etc. can be blended to be very smooth.  In the meantime, just give him the good homemade stuff :).
